    Arrow 05/06 Barina

[B]Hello Holden companions , i've recently been looking at small cars for my gf. We went to a holden dealer naturally, to look at the "all new" Holden Barina 5 door hatch and to my surprise, horror under the bonnet on the ID tag at the front ontop of the Radiator read " Daewoo Australia GM Technology" .

When i got home i searched through the fairwelled Daewoo websites and found the so called "All new " Barina, it's actually a Daewoo Kalos - Check this site out http://www.daewoo.com.au/Common/Pdf/Kalos2004Hatch.pdf . So the new car is actually 2 years old already and just renamed as a holden, to get rid of surplus old Daewoos i guess. Shame on you Holden Shame Shame.

You know the feeling of a cheap car when u can bend the doors in and bend plastic in and out on handles and cup holders. Well this car has all of that plus more cheap stuff.

I suggest you don't buy this car and look into a beaut commodore as it is Ozzie made at least.!!!

When we went to the Holden Dealer to get my GFs Mark IV Astra I asked the Dealer a whole heap of questions about the Korean badged Holdens (Barina and Viva), He wasn't impressed with them to say the least.. poor build quality, things already going wrong..

Better to go the older (like 2 years or something) Opel imported Barina if you want something from "Holden", can get one with all the coolbits as they would have been upgrading a lot of them to clear them out in preperation for Korea, or just go the Japanese route.. this is one of the things they're good at

It's true about the Commodore, they're just based on Opels anyways (VB is an Opel Rekord, VN is an Opel Senator B and VT is a 1993 Opel Omega.. VE is all Holden though (well the least amount of Aussie parts but still ) ).. I've attatched some pics to disturb, the give away is in the doors.. the cars have just been strengthened/widened/new metal/plastic to make them what they are.. and of coarse new drivetrain

How could you not know when Holden and anything mag, newspaper article said that the Barina was a daewoo as is the viva and the new SUV they're bringing to put up against the Territory.
Mooney said that there are going to be more models sourced from Korea. If a commodore becomes a FWD daewoo I'll never look at a Holden again.

Also the Commodore is barely Australian anymore as the parts sourced for the car is just over 50% as someone stated earlier.

Well at least part of it is ozzie made. Better then buying a 100% import. We should be keeping jobs in Aust not exporting our jobs overseas. Before you know it everything will be made in China , well at least everything that isn't already made overseas and Aust will become a bunch of B&B's "Bed and Breakfasts."

This all has to do with John Howard, He's not helping Aust at all, instead he's abolishing Workplace Safety Nets , minimising wages and abolishing trade tariffs for importing products and materials. Thats why Aust can't compete with the rest of the world.

we cant compete not only because of john howard, but his american ass kissing policies, at work the other day, i noticed some canned food on teh shelf, i had never noticed before ever, and it boldly said with a nice background flag "MADE IN THE USA" i was sad, john "dubbleya" howard is a fagget, someone should really think of the purcahse of a .22, and shoot the bastard while he is on his morning walk...

just so u guys know, pretty much everything but the commodore and rodeo and monaro are from korea now, the new vectra has been seen 'filming ads' in sydney and its a daewoo aswell. but. before the cars get here they are redone by holden/gm to appeal more to aussies and other piddlin' crap just so they can say its not completely a deawoo.
i agree with wat was said before, get a astra classic or a euro barina as they r still new in some holden yards, and i only say astra classic as they r lighter and better to drive than a new one, and also have amazing resale...not to mention actually look half decent...thats all i gotta say...
Need some parts for my VH 253:
Green standard steering wheel...Green lower B-pillar covers.
Green sunglasses holder/lower dash bits...Air-con and assorted engine bay parts.
    PM with any info.

well there's some totally uninformed statements. obviously like most of the country you guys know nothing about economics and globalisation. 1st world countries are no longer competitive in the manufacturing industry, hence jobs leaving. maintaining tariffs and high wages isn't going to help, it will simply drive away jobs faster.
and thanks prizedbnx for that statement identifing your lack of maturity, but if you hadn't noticed the ALP is becoming more and more like the liberals because they realise that their socialist policies don't work in today's global economy. just look at germany and how their welfare state has driven up unemployment and debt.

and this whole debate about the barina being korean is pointless, the original barina was a suzuki swift, then an opel/vauxhall corsa and now a daewoo. it has always been built overseas, so what are you complaining about?

simple. we no longer live in an international world, we live in a global world. this means that the controls on trade are no longer defined by nation states and their borders. a global economy now exists, which is above and beyond the control of governments. governments no longer have the power to control trade, only to guide it. they must work in collaboration with multinational corporations.

basically, what i'm saying is goverments must create an environment that is attractive to global corporations and to develop a network of regulations for them to operate in. blaming the current government for a loss of jobs is too simple; there are many reasons for the loss of manufacturing jobs, and they are mainly out of the control of howard or any of his cronies.

australia simply cannot compete with china, southeast asia and india in the manufacturing industry anymore, no matter what tariffs and employment safety nets you put in place. these things drive up the cost of manufacturing, speeding up the process of offshoring.

these problems aren't endemic to australia; europe is suffering just as badly as we are.

i personally believe that the whole money money money economy will collapse eventually as all the people that supposedly can afford to buy products made in china (i.e. us) lose their jobs and have no money to buy them, leading to a world economy crash.

but back to my other point, the barina has never been made in australia, so why the hate for it now? don't like korean people?

I don't think it's a case of not liking Korean people. Don't get onto that card. I personally don't like Daewoos. They have never made a reliable car. It's that simple.

ok fair enough. korean cars are notorious shitboxes, you'd need your head read if you thought about buying one. there's no way in the world i would think about getting a barina now, it seems like a shame as the barina (in my mind at least) has always been a high quality small car, something that is a bit of a rarity these days. they love the corsa over here, that's for sure. get one with a 1.4 litre diesel, you'll get 4-5 l/100km out of it no worries

trepaul, I am just not happy with the level of quality that the Barina is showing now. And for that fact Korean's get paid more then us to produce cars. On A current Affair a few months ago the program looked into Shipyard production and the Average worker on the Docks earned $70 k US but had to work 50 hour weeks.

So if they can still supply higher wages and mass production why can't we?.

If everyone in Australia spent an extra $5 dollars a week on Aussie made products that would equat to an extra 1 billion dollars a year in production, jobs and so fourth.

Do you mind if we make you redundent and ship your job offshore and pay our 3rd world companion $40 US a week to do your job.

This problem is just getting worse and i don't have all the answers , so i say "What can we do about it trepaul"?

Shipping jobs "offshore" is a bigger issue than can or should be addressed here.
The problem lies with the economics of business. Why sell a product for $10.00 that costs you $7.00 to make if you can have it made and shipped (with taxes/import duties included) for $4.00 and sell it for $9.00. Bigger profit and that is unfortunately all the business will be looking at.
Back to the Barina. How many different car companies have made the Barina, 4 or 5?
The Barina has always been a cheap car and that has/will not change.
Let's face it, supposedly the most "Australian" new car on our roads today is the Mitsubishi 380 at approx 60% local content. The new Toyota Aurion (?) is aiming at 65% when released later this year and will only be available here.
All car companies source parts from the cheapest reliable supplier, sometimes just the cheapest. How many million Family Two engines have Holden sold to other car companies? The Daewoo Nubira, along with a few euro cars use this motor and 90% of it 's parts are Australian made. No Commodore from the VL to VZ can claim anywhere near this. Most would get a nasty surprise if they actually knew where a lot of Commodore V6 & V8 parts were made, not just sourced from. GM is a Company that outsources a lot of work for parts manufacture.
It is a sad fact but business is business, as they say, and the profit margin dictates how a business is structured and run. The Government could put more restrictions in place, regarding local content, but the cost would be less trade internationally and our economy would suffer. Interests rates would also rise as a consequence.

Trepaul's last post is right on the money. As stated the greater the number of jobs moved offshore means more unemployment and less people able to afford new products, regardless of where they are made, and the world economy will collapse eventually if more and more jobs are moved offshore.
Sorry back to the original Barina topic.
A Barina has always been a cheap entry level car. The most reliable being the Swift Clone. Most other cars in it's class are flimsy and appear cheaply made, that's why they are cheap.
    Never
$50.00 paid for each answer to a post of mine.

Unfortunately out of all the car manufactured in this country the Commodore has the least Australian content.

The problem is Australia need to start moving from manufacturing to produce it's wealth. While some companies can compete most cant. This means that Australia need to invest money into other area's where we can compete on a global scale. But unfortunately funding to research and development have been dramatically cut in this country as well as education services. While we invent more (per capita) than any other country on earth there is no money to be made to be smart.

Is that right? As I know it all the plastics that are made for the Falcon are still made in the same factory as they always have. The thing is the company running it is called Venture. The buildings sit next to the ford motor company as alot of the other part suppliers for Ford. So I highly doubt that this will happen.

The textile industry is dead in this country. Yet food manufacturing is still viable and can turn a profit (as big industry is investing and even taking a small loss to help Australia out). The electronics manufacturing is slowly dying yet design, testing and sales are still strong. Research into E85 engines (as a few car companies have developed these motors). Producing the fuel so the government doesnt have to subsidise our sugar farmers. And who knows we might produce a 100% ethanol engine. Pharmaceutical research where 20 year patents will yield massive gains for the country. But pharmaceutical manufacturing is still a viable business in this country. There are other examples it's just a matter of looking into other alternatives

Of course, you understand that part production goes to the cheapest tender? Just because Venture is next door to Ford doesn't mean jack. There are many plastic parts in Fords not made by Venture. If the cheapest tender for production of plastic panels comes from India, guess what's going to happen?

But you said we need to move away from manufacturing?

The rest of that paragraph is ideology. Do you have any idea how much R&D costs? How will we pay those costs? It might be fine to be a nation of inventors, but that would lead us to the poorhouse...

Please explain to me how we can move away from manufacturing and still generate wealth in this country?

If you use the R&D to discover, invent, improve something than you can get the money back. eg ****lear (spelling?)
OUr mining industry is viable. When the price of Uranium is driven up Australia will be like the middle east, since we got the largest urainum deposit in the world. And you can protest all you like but any goverenment will allow the deposits to be sold.
I also said that some manufacturing was viable in this country. Hanging on sectors that arn't viable isn't going to help the community or the country. Luckily car manufacturing is still viable in this country...just.

How about I turn the question around and ask what would you do to improve this country? As you seem to know so much.

I wasn't the one spouting crap about needing to move away from manufacturing in order to grow.

Ok people it is in your hands. Today/tomorrow or whenever, when you have the choice to buy Australian made or the cheaper alternative import you think! what is it really worth too you? a little more money spent now could mean the difference for someone else having a job in this country or having it exported offshore. And if you can't afford Australian made maybe you should wait until you can to keep your hard earned cash in Australian hands.
