hey there, only just recently finished my apprenticeship, now im a electrical fitter mechanic, stick with it, i did my time in qld, not a easy thign the old apprenticeships, wages suck, you get treated like crap.
im now a tradesman in construction, try to avoid the housing market, no money in new houses or old houses, domestic sparky's dont earn good dollars.
when ya in construction depending on what company you work for you can expect to earn anything from 21 a hour upto 38 a hour, with all the usual allowances, and fee's and stuff like that. it's a good trade to be in, you can go so far in the electrical game
best of luck cheif, if you ever need help, say the word, tafe is still fairly fresh in my mind
cheers

I have recently started my apprenticeship at Holdens elizabeth plant as a maintenance fitter (fitter and turner). Choice pay and good conditions. And ill see the new commodore pretty soon. The government needs to increase normal apprenticeship wages to attract more apprentices.
Wish i had an apprenticeship somewhere in the automotive industry, i did a cert 1 in light automotive a few years ago.
yeah & also push the mature age stuff too.... I went to apply for one recently & I was told not too bother... Pay so bad that would not be worth doing it.& they wouldnt pass on my resume.
& Just to be sexist here... I get more money given to whom ever hires me.... You think that would be an incentive!!!
D.
I've just started my mechanic apprenticeship, only down side to it though its at a ford dealership but i look at it being the fact of an apprenticeship and look past where it is.
I'm a bit confused, you say "push the mature age stuff" but youre not much younger than me? i started my second apprenticeship when i was 21! it's out there and if anyone discriminates against you, snap kick them in the head. Or you could report them.Originally Posted by Countess

im 25 & a single mum. They wont put me in for them because its not enuf money. I would lose "x" amount of my pension & incur daycare fees etc... therefore making it unfinacial to do an apprenticeshipI would love to do it if
it was just a matter of low pay, but the daycare costs is what kills me![]()
So by the time I wait for the kids to be old enuf, I wil be even older!
But usually we dont even get that far into the convo before basicaly Im pretty much told too old... I would have thought I would be snapped up by them, Im going to get stereotypical here, Im older therefore have full licence& less likely to "hoon" around
, I have some "life" experiance, I have a great background in sales/customer service, & Im female.... now thats good for a whole host of other reasons! 1 of them being more finanical aid for employers... also aformentioned hooning reasons
, & I find that lots of women relate better to another female in some cases... - So more customers! - downside there ofcourse is those few blokes who wont have their car touch by a bimbo woman. & hey also being female... I can sweep, clean & make coffees
after all is that what 1st year apprentices really do?
D.
it's a tuff situation from what i can see. i know a lot of places are a little tentative putting on a na apprentice and actually prefer having them there as a general worker (whatever it may be) to see what your characteristics are....thats only from what i have seen though.....do you have anyone who is willing to babysit for you for less coin? as for a first years duties, sure there is a lot of picking up after tradiesand what not, but if they asked me to make a coffee, i politely told them to f*ck off and make it themselves. It is an advantage being bigger than most of your tradesmen..ha ha!
Three of the 6 apprentices that started with me at GMH are 30. But they were on the production line before hand so they remain on their curent wage where as i have to start on a lower wage. So they had incentive to start an apprenticeship. But otherwise their is no incentive for older people to start an apprenticeship because they are usually living out of home and have bills and kids and shit, which costs money. Also, employers will employ someone on whether they will be good at the job not by how much life experience they have or whether they have their full liscence!
I'm an Apprentice Spray Painter, With Woods Accident Repair center, In Melb, Victoria.Scoresby branch. I'm 17 by the way... When I'm finished I'll be 20/21year old
Not bad
