Default Can a taxi driver carry a loaded gun?

    As title asks... Legalities?

    Licencing?

And on side note, anyone know what type of modifcations can be made to a taxi vehicle? Can things be altered, ie: bulletproof screens etc?

Hey, don't laugh! I'm asking seriously!

What about rocket launchers and machine guns in the headlights.. Smoke screens, oil slicks or even revolving license plates..

Hahah but good question.. I doubt they would be able to carry guns.. I'm sure more would if they could.. But who knows..

    Best ask the coppers..

NO. What is the driver going to do? Shoot someone if he doesn't pay?

Am I allowed to carry a 12 inch hunting knife in my jacket just in case someone trys to rob me?

yeah, being an employment consultant, I just saw a job advertised for $1000 a week cab driving... Would be SO much easier than this I'm doing now, at least when I get home I wouldn't be thinking about stuff I'd forgotten to do at work and stuff! :P (unless I left a passanger in the boot! lmao)

I am certain a copper would say NO! Not a loaded firearm and especially a taxi driver. AFAIK, you may carry a firearm in a vehicle if you were going to a mates house to then go out rabbit shooting etc. In all cases, a firearm should never be loaded while driving anyway.

with todays current gun laws, you can't even have a loaded gun in your house! it must be unloaded & placed in gun safe.

definitely not in your taxi loaded!

I know a taxi driver who carries a syringe full of tomato sauce as deterrent to syringe waving robbers. (my syringe is bigger than yours etc)
    This is illegal too....

basically, you can't carry anything in your car, on your person or store anything in your house to use as self defense.

there was a taxi driver who gave chase to some young blokes who hopped in his maxi cab, then bolted without paying.
they ran over this embankment, he followed, the only problem was, it was a three meter drop! two persons ended up with broken ankles!

I'm lucky though - I am agile and can run fast! not like your typical driver!

I wouldn't mind carring a stun gun in my cab, but this is illegal to posses for starters...

$1,000 / week? you would have to do some extraordinary hours! you can do less hours for more money in profitable peak times (i.e weekends) but you lose your social life etc... (although you can pick up chicks through your taxi driving!)

If you worked 70 hours a week you could possibly take home $600 - $700

Refer to thread "ask the cabbie"

Taxi driving is a enjoyable job if you enjoy driving though...

Jeez mate, you're only 22.. I thought you had to be at least 21 to be a cabbie.. And a lot of companies require 25 for insurance reasons..

I have been a part time cabbie since I was 20. (youngest Black & White in Brissy)

I lot of people have that scared look on their face when they get in! ('do you actually have a licence' etc!)

you can became a cabbie as soon as you have your open licence (20 in qld)

you pay $4.40 insurance per shift (no excess etc) crash as many as you want! (obviously, you would'nt make use of this!) some companies impose a $500 excess on their drivers though.

its a little silly. you can drive a cab when you're under 21, but try hiring a car!

hehe, might be illegal, but I'd probably rather get a tazer imported... either that or just a standard cattle prod. :P *shrug*

I reckon anyone dealing with the public and money should be allowed to carry a sevice pistol. Yes go through the proper training and make sure they haven't got a bad background.
Have the law allow them to shoot people when threatned. Might be harsh, but two of three dudes would only have to be shot, then this will make the rest of them think twice about robbing someone next time.
Only problem I have is, that if such as a taxi driver were to carry guns/pistols around with them, if someone really bad dude wanted to roll them. They are likely to seriously injure or shoot the taxi driver to get the money instead of just mugging them like they normally do.
    Yours Kindly,
    Jim

Geez I am prett sure in N.S.W. you have to have your full license for 3 years straight after your Ps to apply for a taxi class license, as well have no driving records either I think. But then again, in N.S.W. we have a three year P Plates system too. So 20 years of age would be right if you only had Ps for one year.
    Yours Kindly,
    Jim

not quite Taxi -related... but I was always wary of my now ex Husband getting his H6 as asecurity gaurd... My line of thinking was if he "needed" his H6 that meant he would be put in the postion that he could get shot... Vs non-armed & less risks IMO anyways... same goes for Cabbies... If they carry... more chance the thugs will also....

My BIL works as an employment consultant and he earns good money and just sits on his arse surfing the net all day. If he works on the weekend he receives vouchers to the value of a 100 bucks for any coles myer store. But he is a lazy prick so you must be doing the job right if you are thinking about your work at home.

i know you can buy them off ebay pretty cheap, but it is pretty illegal too... I would hate to be caught importing it with my address on it.
supposedly there pretty simple to make. do you have to be licenced or something to have a cattle prod?

its a very controversial subject to say the least!

I think the same as yourself... it would eliminate a lot of petty crime....

the hardcore underworld blokes still have their guns anyway. guns laws didn't make much difference to them.

this opens a real can of worms!!!!!
