    Default Helping out research

Hi everyone we have created a team on a research website. All you have to do is join up and it runs in the background. I will post weekly stats on how our team is going.

    Use the following links:

Folding@Home - Team Number is 24 and name to use is JustCommodores

Alternatively if you would rather search for aliens

    Seti@Home - Team Number is 124564

Up to date team stats are as follows:
    Folding@Home Team Stats
    Seti@Home Team Stats

    A bit of background information

What is SETI@Home - SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data.

Folding@Home - Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

If you need any assistance getting it up and running fire away

Folding@home is just using your spare cpu time (so if you are doing nothing, like downloading a movie, it'll use your cpu then) to do very labour intensive things.

why not? my pc stays on alot of the time with no-one on it, and only downloading stuff, so the resources are there, it doesnt hurt anyone, only costs your power which is your choice to have it on, and your internet time, ehich most people dont use hourly caps anymore.

and you're part of something big.

Who’s actually running folding@home? I’m just curious if anyone else apart from me are running it?

I'd say you've picked up a big one to start with, it won't take 4 years to complete so don't worry, give it an hour or two to get going and then you'll get the correct time.

50000 ? damn that very well could be a 600 pointer.

where it says "working on" in the display window have a look at what it says then go here http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html and match it up, look in the credit column to see how many points it's worth.

If you have a hunt around on the home page for Folding@Home there should be an article somewhere (well there used to be) that explains it all.

I do believe over the years the results they have received have gone towards developing better treatment for certain diseases

just remember that the program is not only using your processor but is also using your internet connection. Each time it uploads and downloads information to its server, it is using YOUR download allowance, if your service has one.

Yay well it just sorted itself out .... 5 days

Yeh vh i know that... but i had a look and the average WU is <5mb.. you have to specifically opt in for larger. Considering most WU's are going to take several days... I don't see an issue. I usually have a couple of GB to burn at the end of my billing month anyway, may as well do something useful with it. The machine just sits on 24/7 running BT, so one of these projects suit it perfectly, doing something useful and doesn't impact me in the slightest.

it was more directed at people on smaller plans that don't really know much about how the net works. the people that check their emails, check the forums and that's it.

Ok well it's now on my main laptop too... cranks along a bit faster (1sec/frame faster... dont sound much but with 50,000 frames :P) but can only run it at night..

picked up the same frigging 50,000 frame WU... so i'll be cruising when they are done :P but what a pain.
