    Talking Skateboarders

    Who here skates?

I started at the end of 1998, stopped for about 3 years up until about 2 weeks ago and I'm right back into it! Mostly bowl skating, but I'm getting into more street and stuff now.

i skated for about 4 years solidly about 5 years ago. everyday without fail from morning to night. i fuggin loved it. then i went camping with some mates and ripped the ?satorius? (longest muscle in the leg) off my hip bone. couldnt skate for a year and then i never went back

snowboarding and surfing is the way to go now

Ehh that sucks! At least you're into two other rather excellent board sports to make up for it now

used to skate before it was the "kewl" thing to do, (had to stop due to a fractured thumb and wrist) and now skaters have the opinion that they rule the earth (well up here they do) and I just avoid the little bastards. they'll smash your skull with the board just for something to do.
little f**ks need to be shot. they're wreaking havoc here and no-one can do anything coz they're all afraid, and no-one will fight them because if one goes down he gets all his mates to jump you

They sound like homies who skate, not real skaters. Most skaters aren't like that. Trust me, we're not all like that at all! For the most part we just want to skate and have fun without being harassed. Some people just ruin it for the rest of us.

VS SII - I can do things like rock to fakie, backside and frontside 50-50, k-stall, switch 50-50, frontside 180 in the tranny (I had backside 180s ok before I stopped but not great)... The bowl I skate in is 4' spined into 2', I can air it both ways, used to be able to fakie air it from the 4' into the 2'... Used to be able to do indy, nose, melloncollie, mute and roast beef grabs... I think I had some stalefish grabs happening at one point but for the most part I just tried to do boned melloncollies.

As far as much street skating goes, I'm pretty atrocious . I can land about 1 kickflip in 3, ollie about 1 1/2 feet high, f/s 50-50 on a box or whatever, shuvit, nollie-shuvit, nollie, boardslide on small rails .

I got my first board in august 2001 and went through to probably start-mid 2003 i could ollie before i even owned a board (Am i good or what hehe ) Eased off it in grade 12 due to studies and a missus. Go for an occasional skate on sundays now (mainly late arv/night) with my just about 300 dollar board with abec 7's which were the first things to go (stick with the 5's) Only do skate park skating now...don't do the tresspassing into schools nemore cuz im 18+ cops won't just chase me down they'll want me arrested. The only prob with skate park skating is it's mainly vert, and im scared of it usually from bad experiences. Can't do much street at a park, best trick i can do is 360 kickflip.

fakie airs from the 4' to 2', very nice man.

i think i was the opposite of that man. couldnt skate ramps to save myself. i mainly skated schools and stairsets. i used to ollie stuff like trolleys and bins. my kickflip was pretty big too. my favourite trick was the backside flip and could do that off stairsets. i used to skate the street style stuff on my local skate park. used to get pretty big noseslides down the big ledge. ahh those were the days. all the little grommits used to watch me. i actually jumped on a mates board the other day and had a shot. i was really bad. could hardly ollie at all. oh the shame.

what boards, trucks and wheels did you guys like best? from memory i had destructo trucks and ricta wheels on a 'hardcore' deck (local brand that i found had the most pop)

keep up the skating david and let me know what new tricks your nailing

the group of skaters i always skated with, we were all into tensor trucks. Vert wheels seem to roll nicely tho. Never really cared about the deck...but if i break the one i got now, ill probably get a more expensive one as i am earning more than 5 bucks a week now

Heh, I just go with cheap blank stuff.

At the moment I'm riding on:

a $65 Union Standard blank deck
a set of $30 blank wheels (They're good hard ones, about 57mm I think)
4 year old Titan Ti-Lite trucks (can't get them anymore although they're great trucks)
a set of VXB rubber seal Ceramic bearings - www.vxb.com cheap bearings!! They are honestly the best bearings I've ever used.

Semi - At my skatepark the bike riders monopolise the place and don't give the skaters any room to move. It's very frustrating. I Don't mind them when they wait their turns, but the thing is THEY DON'T.

VS - I haven't managed to land the fakie air again yet since I started again, but it's on my list of things to relearn! I have a mate who used to be able to full cab the spine both ways! He'd actually roll into the 2' bowl backwards to do it, I was never able to do that I was too scared .

But if you wanna get back into it, ollies will come back to you in about 30 minutes of keeping at them!

I can ollie about 2' high now, I'm stoked! Gotta get my kickflips more consistent and more useful though. I'm working on relearning boardslides and 50-50s at the moment, also trying to nail impossibles and 360-flips - I'm actually closer to getting impossibles than 360 flips at the moment!!!

But can you ride a skateboard well?

I get fed up with hearing people bag out skating/BMX/blading/surfing, etc. They're all challenging, FUN sports - they just don't all appeal to everyone. Doesn't mean any one of them is better than the other. I can't surf to save my life, but that doesn't mean surfing is rubbish.

Seriously, if you want to bag out various 'extreme' sports (and I use the term loosely because it's a media hype label) then go back to your local high school and bag them out there. It's a childish attitude that I don't expect to see in people close to my age (and older).

We should respect the accomplishments of people who are involved in other activities - not harrass them. I don't like the way the BMX riders get in the way all the time at the skate park (and I'll have a go at them when they do) but I can appreciate the work they've put in when they do a 360 over the spine or stall on one wheel on the coping.

And Semi - it's easier to learn to navigate a bike around your local streets than it is to ride a skateboard. It takes longer to learn to ollie than it does to learn to stay on the bike in the first place, and being able to ollie is just as essential as being able to roll on the skateboard (probably even more so).

meh, try rollerblades, a skateboard you can jump off if something goes wrong and you are back on your own two feet, rollerblades well, regardless of what you do you have wheels on your feet

:my: after reading the above post i guess everyone's getting all touchy about their choice of sport lol, i think it was half said as a joke guys, wooosaaaa

Snowboarding is great fun, but it's hard on the knees and buttocks when you're learning

I was saying it as a joke fellas. Dont worry. Im in 2 minds about blading- you've got nowhere to go when you fall, and your legs can just dissappear under you. Riding though, you;ve got lots of pointy bits that love eating you, especially your shins. I actually did skate for a while, and a few of my mates rode, and i got into riding. I can still ollie and drop in and stuff, boardslide and nail the occasional varial flip. woohoo.

    This post is going nowhere

i used to sk8 in my younger days. Started in 93' but didnt get serious until 95. Quit some time around 99 when i got sick of all the little toys skating for all the wrong reasons coming up 2 us asking "how high can you ollie?", "do a kickflip"...and soon moved on to other things. Though these people(toys) are everywhere still gots to put up with em in the social circles i run in nowdays.

And people just move on, too old for that sh1t now, and im over it... no interest in sk8ing any more.
