ok so now i might be upgrading my drive space and buying another hard drive, thanks to everyone who helped me in my last thread about graphics cards, now i'm wanting to known whats the difference between IDE and SATA hard drives and SCSI??? i mean whys there so many anyways
I have an ASUS A7V600-X motherboard and i dont know which one will be suitable
Thanks in advance
Cheers

IDE (ATA) is similar to SATA, only SATA uses serial instead of parallel communication meaning it can achieve faster speeds (SATA 2 = 300mbps and SATA 3 = 600mbps theoretical).. what you'd be looking at at the moment is SATA 1 which is 150mbps, still faster than IDE (ATA)s 133mbps but SATA is the future of the hard drive so it would be better to get that and be compatable with future technology
SCSI is a completely different standard which allows connections of up to 14 devices through the one cable, it's typically used in servers and has speeds of something like 150mbps if I remember correctly, everything in this standard costs more and it's not really worth it for you home PC unless you want to run like 10 hard drives lol
If you want to use this hard drive in a future computer in 2-3 years I say get the SATA, if you want a cheapy drive with still pretty good performance get the IDE one..
Also SATA has native support for things like RAID which means you can use several hard drives and make the data span across them and another type of RAID which lets you run two drives at once pretty much doing the same thing and having the same data, again something you won't really need on your home PC if you back-up often
The Motherboard you are looking at supports SATA.
that asus motherboard has SATA, so i say go with a sata drive

Looks like your board will run SATA, so that would be the preferred interface.

ah k yea i've have this the ASUS A7V600-X for about 3 years now, and i need to buy more space and i didn't know which drive to get... so any SATA hard drive will work with my board?
Thanks for all your advice guys

Yes, all SATA drives will work...couple of things
*GHOST, if you use it has a couple of issues with SATA. Can be fixed with a few CMD fixes.
*SATA2 is cable backwards compatable so dont feel limited to the HDD you buy.
*Make sure you get a SATA power adapter cos SOME drives only support SATA power connoctors not the standard molex connectors.
Other than that your good to go.

Oh and if you are going bigger than 120gb... make sure you have at least xp sp1a installed![]()

Latest version of Ghost has no probs with SATA both in Windows and when booting off the recovery CD... on my systems anyway.
As an aside, the bandwidth capabilities of SATA specifications only become relevant when running multiple drives. Most good SATA drives pump out around 35MB/s (140Mbps) throughput. So SATA1 is fine for single drive applications but SATA2 is necessary to benefit from running multiple drives, such as those used in RAID configurations etc.
SCSI3 (Ultra320) supports up to 320Mbps but the drives and controllers are much more intelligent than those used in IDE/ATA and SATA, but as mentioned above, very few people use this in home PCs. I had an 18GB 10krpm SCSI drive in my system a few years ago, was fast but bloody noisy and obviously 18GB isn't exactly a lot and large capacity SCSI drives are horrendously expensive.
i'm pretty sure i got sp2, but how do i check?

physical memory is just the amount of RAM you have.
If you liked this post, click the scales
I'm not sure why there's a difference, could be anything from different setups using different amounts of memory to just different types of RAM, but 4 kilobytes I wouldn't stress about man
so u saying holdensupporter2005 has 2GB of RAM`!?~?!~? thats nuts...
i want it
