Hey guys, i'm currently in year 3 of a 5 year engineering(electrical)/science(physics) degree, just wondering what jobs are out there for me when i graduate(hopefully move into eng job). Also i wanna know the pay rate after about 5-10 years down the track in the industry(dont get me wrong, i like the course, but i also like the fact that i will get paid to do something i like
cheers
Electrical and electronics engineers have a wide variety of choices from design, production, testing, installation, service support, management and sales. Even from graduation you can find positions into any or other positions.
A lot depends on what you like and what areas you are good at, plus where you want to go.
I'm sure you have checked out the various newspaper web sites but also look at some company websites such as www.resmed.com.au as many companies only advertise on their own web sites.
Pay rate? Can vary widely, probably $60k to $80k but definite possibilities for $100k+. Again very dependent on your skills and opportunities. Sadly the higher pay rates generally are for people who have moved into management so you need to consider this in your career.
Also consider going overseas as the engineering opportunities are much wider.
Not sure what the go is on engineering, but when i finish my apprenticeship as an electrical mechanic (flash name for a jack-of-all-trades sparky) we've been told that the average is about $70k/year and really we shouldnt be making less than $50k/year if we arent lazy.
Jobs out on the mines look to be $80k-$100+k/year, which is top end of this trade.
Definitely check out job websites like seek.com.au and see if you can find anything that looks like what you want to do, see how much experience they want for the position and how much it pays. Definitely the easiest way, also don't be afraid to call them and ask what the job involves/how much it pays/etc, they really dont mind since you might just be applying for the job.
All the best with studying.
Under John Howards Legislative Reform to the Industrial Relations commission your take home pay will be cut , forced onto a AWA, no guarantee of job security, and if u work for a small company no Unfair Dismissal Claims. The future looks bleak.
Just my Rant lol
