Question Need help with burning DVD...

first when i tried Nero to burn a DVD i got the error that the DVD was protected.... then i got the prog AnyDVD that you run while burning ( it removes the protection and region code it says).... i then was able to burn a copy.... it played real good it my dvd Teak player.... but the prob is.... on the original DVD i can select English or French subtitles or no susbtitles..... on the original the subtitles work fine... but on the copy i cant get them to work from the menu.... do you think i should have used a special double layer dvd blank?...i just used 4.7 gb 4x to 8x DVD-R blank cos this was my first try at burning dvd....

When copying a movie to a standard (4.7gb) DVD you will lose some features as the DVD cannot hold as much as the original DVD (8.5GB).

Usually the first features to be dropped are multiple languages and subtitles, as you have experienced. It's also not uncommon to lose special features.. depending on the space required.

You will fit the full thing on a dual layer dvd,, but prepared to spend $5+ per disc.

This is true. A good indication if that too good to be true price was because was a pirated copy. Not for the this case but in general. who needs subtotals anyway. Plus, i won't go into the legalaties of all this. I'm sure you know.

why dont you just download dvdshrink? you can shrink almost any dvd to fit a 4.7gb disc with a bit of loss in quality, and it also decrypts them too

DVD-shrink if tops!! You cant even really tell the quality loss at all.
Best of all its free. I haven't paid for a DVD in ages!!!

I've got a question though on the same subject. (Dont mean to hijack)
But I've got a few movies downloaded in avi file format. Can ne1 tell me whats a good conversion program is to convert the files to DVD files.

    Cheers, Keegan.

I have a fair bit of experience in burning larger dvd's (DVD-9 (8.5gb)) to smaller (DVD-5(4.7gb)) ... mind you all the dvd's were completely legal to copy.

DVD shrink is your best friend when it comes to a good free dvd ripper, however, it has been shown, in my experience that when you reduce the video quality, not only will it take alot longer, it also has the chance to stuff up during playback. I usually just delete the crappy director's commentary etc until it comes back down to being 100% video quality.

yeah works for me. not too hard to make simple menus and split into chapters. can have a few problems freezing at times though.

and expect long encoding times, but thats normal with any conversion program

You need to check the options in AnyDVD. There will be options to enable/disable certain languages. AnyDVD is also best used along side CloneDVD.

I've used TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress for a while and found it good value and easy to use. http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/pr...p_feature.html
