I was just stuffing around tonight and I noticed some stuff of the Microsoft site about WINDOWS VISTA. Any techies out there know anything about it?
I have been out of the industry for nearly 5 years so I dont keep myself upto date with the techie stuff any more. I am sure there are people out there who know about it or involved in it maybe. Maybe there may be a BETA tester out there.
you can get beta versions off the net if you feel like wasting 2.4gb..
I downloaded the april beta release.. it's got some cool stuff but i'm over it for now since there's a total lack of driver/app support for it.

it was meant to be out about the same time as the next generation of intel chips (october/november I think), but has been delayed until after the new year. I think they are releasing a corporate version before Christmas. It apparently has a lot more eye candy that can use our fancy graphics cards and no more security holes. LOL.
Yeah I haven't been able to turn on the eye candy.. could only get it to install on my older pc with crappy graphics and then no recent driver support either,
found it won't install to my usb hdd so i can't install it on my new notebook with better graphics (the hdd in the caddy is PATA, notebook takes SATA so can't just drop it in the notebook itself). older notebook is PATA so simple drive swap and install away..

My mate had it...
He's a tech admin...
Said it's painful and horrid in the fact that the beta is totally unstable! Hopefully it's fixed before its released... Knowing Microsoft... It won't be...
They've been saying that for years. I still vote for XP SP1, had miles less problems on SP1 computer than on SP2 computer. seems to me that every patch they come up with creates the need for another. besides, every version of windows has 1000 hackers cut it up within 24 hours of it's release...Originally Posted by dephilile

Every release is more stable that the last with more features included, and they are being released at a rate of 1 beta per month.. so there'll be a fair few more betas released before it's finalised and released

The specs for running it are rather amusing, seach the net. Its 64bit based so an X86 chip is on the ay out im afraid in terms of what micro$hit are concerned. Imagine XP with 3D glasses on...thats VISTA (Project name Longhorn). im not gonna bother with it till at least SP1 has been relaesed for it...and there will be plenty of thoses things that are illegal that i dont use....serials thats it....Good on micro$hit for trying though...its been how many years now??? Although..on that note......they are making an "executive" version of an OS to compete with the UNIX platform..thats right, an OS that works with NO bells and whistles....will it happen the 1st time, probably not but thats why versions have updates and beta's etc...etc....

I know a mate running it (albeit slightly sluggishly) on a p3-m 1.06ghz with 1gb ram and a 7200rpm 2.5" hdd... 32mb graphics.
Yeah he has to turn all the eye candy off and the hdd does work a bit... but it runs.
Current mid-high end systems will be fine for basic operation... just don't expect to be able to run all the fancy graphics unless you drop in a beefy vid card.

it gets me how they went from OS (Operating System) to OSFWOSTCHBLOSTTBTWFO......(operating system filled other shit that could have been left out so that the bloody thing works for once)
it seems to be dooing less operating every version they bring out......i want eye candy...ill by a skyline with a milo tin and rev the shit out of it in front of strip club, chicks dig that right? :P lol....

XP came out when i was in year 9 or 10. so about 5 or 6 years ago i guess.Originally Posted by azkwazere

XP came out in 2001, Vista is going to be the latest and greatest but if I can't even resolve my issues with XP x64 there's no way in hell I'm going to use Vista until it becomes very much mainstream, and everything works (in particular nokia/motorola phone drivers and non-standard xbox 360 controller drivers - xinput sucks)..
I'll still stick-up for Windows Server 2003 as being my favorite at the moment, once all the unnecessary services are stopped and features enabled it's quite a stable powerhouse built on Windows XP (hell Vista was being built S2003 instead of XP)
I've been playing with different OS's for quite a while now, Vista when it was just a baby (longhorn 3xxx) and the last Vista I tried was 5308 32-bit (if they can barely support our products with 32 bit drivers we're doomed if we're going to be using 64 bit version lol), even Mac OSX and a few linux builds.. meh to them, I keep coming back to 32-bit 2003/XP MCE 2005
Even at the moment I have to use a virtual machine to connect to our phones because there's no 64 bit drivers for them, companies need to start putting an effort in lol
Not worth it in my opinion, needs a s*itload of PC specs and I ain't gonna spent more money than I need to on upgrading the computers (although mine's near top of the line hehe) I downloaded the Vista skins (not the full OS, and it's crap too- who want's transparent windows? If you want to see screenshots of the latest build of Vista, visit www.winsupersite.com.
It's not only Vista that's getting that interface, check out the latest version of office I acquired.. and don't even ask what I had to go through to get uxtheme installed on x64 windows lol

Cant wait for vista, PC is already for it to go on when it comes out end of Jan 07. i guess its sad that im all excited for it :P, mainly wat it for the eyecandy, Areo looks great!!![]()
Thats all right, thats ok, I drive a commodore anyway!!!!
Yeah everyone that bags it is either a dummy and jealous of the money M$ rake in... or have been using windows since 95 and are still complaining... If they took up programming they'd understand there's millions of lines of code which isn't an easy task to do, and they'd give it some repect for what it is.Originally Posted by minux
Any of the slaggers out there tried installing Linux and got it networked with their isp as easily and straight forwards as XP ?

Well it was easy for me to setup linux to connect to the internet, I think I was playing with Mandriva, Red Hat and Knoppix (love it).. but it's probably because it auto-detected my on-board nforce4 network card and did it's thing, and the internet comes straight out of the router to the four boxes
Speaking of the source-code, I used to have the bits that got leaked out from Windows 2000, think one of them was for the start menu.. my god the profanities in there, you can tell they don't enjoy their jobs "doing this so this ****ing thing will work" or something like that

..ummm yep, not really rocket science really... i only use windows for the following reasons:Originally Posted by sixshooter
1. Drivers - Linux has a severe lack of them with certain models of Hardware
2. CS (Customer Support) - I have a lot of clients who use windows who need alot of help...how am i supposd to do that when i dont use the product?
3. Time - I cant be bothered recompiling my kernal everytime i want to add something..thats why linux for me is a server only platform at present. I just dont have time mcuk around with it as a desktop. 3 jobs, no life.
i slag microsoft because for the money everyone pays for the bloody software and the time they spend on it and the money they have, they keep bringing out unstable shit. Sure its hard work etc to get some of it to work, but if they operated like any of the UNIX dev teams then maybe they'll produce something useful.... i have respect for bill gates in terms of business planning, he has made his bankrupt compnay into an empire, however, his software is not as..well good now is it???

I tried looking for a download of it but I couldnt find it. Any links please. The only download I found needed access numbers or membership.
Or maybe someone could snail mail me a copy. I would pay for the DVD and postage of course.
torrentspy.com for the whole torrent of Vista, I cancelled it cos I found the theme pack (which stuffed my computer).
