Ford New Zealand is recalling 13,362 AUI and AUII Falcon models, built between June 1, 1998 and May 22, 2001, to verify the integrity of a steering rack mounting stud.
Vehicle models affected include Forte, Futura, XR, Fairmont, Fairlane, LTD, FTE and ute models built during this period. A change in manufacturing process means that vehicles built after May 22, 2001 are not affected.
Ford says that over-tightening of the steering rack mounting stud during service could lead to a condition that allows the stud to loosen. In extreme cases, the stud may detach and result in deterioration or loss of steering control.
The Australian equivalent of New Zealand's LTSA, the Department of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS) has reported two cases of loose studs and one case of a missing stud, and Ford's own data has identified a further 28 vehicles which may have experienced this concern. Vehicles manufactured during the recall period total 233,791.
Ford says no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of this condition, and there are no reported cases in New Zealand.
Ford New Zealand will be contacting customers via mail to advise of the required action. A free phone number has also been set up to answer customer queries: this number is 0800 15 16 17.
I was reading this when i awoke this morning and laughed my head off ..
Good on you Falcons Often Recalled Daily.....HEHE
now ford is really living up to their name :P
Thats all right, thats ok, I drive a commodore anyway!!!!
As expected the recall has been announced in Australia now as well. 230,000 cars have been recalled. You've got wonder how millions of dollars this costs a company. I wonder whether the engineer who designed that steering rack is still with the company?
Mark.
serves themselvs right for designing such a crappy car and putting the ford name on it!Originally Posted by Demons1964

Ford issued the voluntary recall of nearly 14 thousand Falcons built between 1998 and 2001.
The over-tightening of a couple of steering rack studs during service could affect the steering of the car.
Police spokeswoman Sarah Martin says 300 of the three thousand police car fleet have been taken off frontline duty as a precautionary measure.
She says it will not have much of an effect on police work, as Holdens are the predominant fleet cars for police.
Fords dont cut it anyways they should ditch em all and buy more VY's.. here in nz the commodore is used as highway patrol cars ..even the odd SS unmarked has been used in city areas
Go Holden ..hehe
Uh huh. Here in QLD I see VY police cars everywhere.![]()
actually on the coast there is an increasing number of BA Falcons being used as D cars.....and i think HEAT6 is an XR6 Turbo pursuit carOriginally Posted by goVY

Interesting. Well at least in regional QLD there's a lot of VY's, mainly Exec's and SS's.
Hate to rain on your parade but the recall was only a preventitive measure because supposedly a taxi with 1.5 million kms had the studs come loose. They just put a tiny tack weld on the opposite side of the steering rack mounting studs so you can sleep tight.
Au was ugly but for chassis rugedness it had it all over the lion. The VE can't come fast enough if you ask me. Although I must admit the ecotec v6 is more reliable than the ford straight six for me. Long alloy heads on a truck engine isn't very intelligent.
