What influences as kids did everyone have? What was the family car you grew up with? Interesting to find out how many people here actually grew up with Commodores....
I grew up around V8 Fords!![]()
some old valiant or something, it was square and white, my dad let me drive it when i was about 4. turns out you dont just REEF the hell out of the wheel to turn into the driveway
They had a morris minor in some pics too
mostly small cars, still got mums old pintara ! and she even had a torana once.
I never grew up around them, I wasnt even into commodores or liked them when I bought mine.. the car turned me I think. In the pursuit to learn more about what I am driving, and not pay a cent to a mechanic I got into it, and am now surrounded by it, live and breath it.
I did however know that fords were gay long before I even knew what they were !!!
CONVERT TO V8& NEVER LOOK BACK

I grew up around commodores......
i remember back to when VP's were new
As dad worked at a Holden Car Dealership he always brought home holdens... every model from VP - VY so far.... and monaros, clubsports, statesmans etc etc....
Some people say less talk more action, i say more torque less traction.
Holdens all the way!
Lets see...
From what i can remember first was:
1. SL/R Torana
2. 86 Vl sl 5 speed
3. 87 Vl berlina
4. Vr berlina
Just luuurrrve my holdens!
I grew up around performance ford's, from blown 351 XD's to turboed ED's
grandfather had FJ when I was baby early 50's, used by all the family at some stage, dad's brother had EK, our first family car was FE acquired in 63 when we moved to Gippsland from the city. traded in for Morris 1100, then to HQ-202, to Ford Laser in early 80's. My own first car was HQ panel van 308 4speed in 1974. Traded for Toyota Corana CS in 1976 written off and acquired an XB falcon wagon to XD wagon to the current vehicle, VP wagon, which has proved to be the most reliable vehicle I have driven although my favourite would probably be the HQ.![]()
well the list is something like
- VW Beetle (or something similar!), camry, datsons, nothing holdens till I was 15 when My dad bought a VL thinking it was the best thing since sliced bread, got stolen 3 times and then wrote off..hmm, but yeah.. i always liked holdens :P
Holdens and Fords.
Just about every car in my family, on my mum and dad's side is either a Holden or a Ford.
My dad's side is a Ford family. I currently have the only Commodore, with the exception of my cousin with a VC, but he's a Ford man.
Now in my early 20s, I can say the car that I idolise the most is the VL.
grew up with a HK wagon and a VB SL/e 308. later on a toyota 4 runner was added.
theses days still all holden a vy, ah astra and my vp berlina
Always remember laying down as 5 years old in the back seat being woken to find my dad got pulled over by the plod 4 speeding in his brand new '68 XT Falcon with a big bad 3.6 litre 221 six.....Then I went n ruined my love of fords by learning 1st hand how dodgy the marque is, by working 4 a dealership....
Holdens + Hyundai Excel 1997
VH SLX >VN Station Wagon >Hynundai Excel, VT Commodore (Parents car and work vehicle)
My Cars. N12 5 speed Pulsar,Holden VN Calais and now Injected 5litre VN SS

attn Über geeks, i play Second life. Patrio Graysmark.
i spent 11 years of my childhood (not growing up) in a mining town in SA.
I never saw a ricer until we moved to darwin when i was 17. I wanted to know why they were trying to make stupid little cars sound like a v8.
what i did grow up with was mining company hiluxes, senior staff 4wds, commodores, falcons and our fiat, then subaru then commodore.
oh, and pushbikes. small town= short ride to get anywhere.
ECOTEC KICKED IN yO!!!!!!
and here I was thinkin you were a youg'n..... oh well.Originally Posted by NOGEN 3
in my earlier years we had a xd fowlcan and a xke jag, then 2 ka lasers then 2 mercs a volvo and 2 ea falcs as company cars, traded in volvo and 1 merc for a nissan patrol and a pulsar, had a vk sl(i think) for a few months, then had a bitsashitty manga, then a toymota echo and my vr
i had grown up around a few cars so i'll go over what there was:
Dad - Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, 350 Chev, and changed to soft-top
Mom - Subaru Sports Wagon, Mitsubishi Express L300, Mitsubishi Magna 2002
Nanna - Grandad - Volkswagon Fastback, Holden Gemini
Aunty & Uncle1 - Mitsubishi Magna 1994, VS Commodore, Mitsubishi Magna 2002
Aunty & Uncle2 - Toyota Landruiser LongWheelBase (80's Series i think), Volvo
Aunty & Uncle3 - Mitsubishi Pajero
Cousin1 - Holden Gemini, Suzuki Seirra, Ford TX-3, Morris Mini, Nissan Pathfinder
Cousin2 - Holden EH Sedan, then he sold it to move to england
Cousin3 - VB, VC & VH Commodores, then he started buying motorbikes
Cousin4 - Torana SLR5000, and im not too sure what else
Cousin5 - Holden Gemini
Cousin6 - Mitsubishi Lancer 1994
Then i have other cousins who i didnt see they had Hilux's and different cars every time i saw them, there Dad (my dads brother) had a Porsche 944 Turbo, and he owned a big Ford Bronco before that.
As u can see i didnt grow up around Commodores too much myself, there was only 4 that i ever saw. As a kid, like most kids u enjoy exotics or hotrods, so that what u want when ur older. as i got to 14-15 that was when i started to get realistic and decide what i wanted.
Originally opting for a HQ Panel Van, then HQ Ute, then a HQ 2 Door Coupe or Monaro, eventuallyi relaised it was just going to be too hard to find one, and if i did it would probably be to much, so i opted for a VN Commodore, i started reading anything and everything on the VN, but before i went to get one 3 kids had one at school, 2 sedans and 1 wagon, none drove to school tho, i thort no, im gonna upgrade and i got a Calais. and thats where i am currently...
Cheers, Todd
*note - sorry its long*
VY works currently in PRODUCTION!!
Engine will still be sloow!!!!! ;-)
grew up with old BMW's the old ones are good i dont like the new ones unless they are the M Series
Well, my dad had a HZ Premier wagon with 253, trimatic and GTS instruments (currently being restored), then a VS ute (totalled), Excel, and now a VX ute. mum had a UC Torana, then a VK wagon, then a pulsar, then a VS BT1 and now a 5 speed manual VX S.
My uncle started with a HJ GTS monaro, then he had a VH with a worked 5 litre, then a HQ one tonner and now a hilux ute with a 202.
VR II S sedan - Genesis Blue - Cammed 304 - T5 - 19's - Weekend warrior
VS II S ute - Diablo Red - V6 - Getrag - Daily Hack
i grew up around shit...
lol an old mazda bomb, then an alpha romeo, then 2 volvo's, a pajero, a prado and now a C200K
edit:
parents definetly not into cars, i grew into them myself![]()
<<<Rob>>>
Ecotec VP, 135rwkw, 427nm
i grep up around nissan patrols and toyota landcruisers, as our family cars. then our other cars were a torana, hq ute, vb,vh and couple of vn commodores. now we have 3 statos, a vq, a vs caprice and a wh, and of corse my vn berlina
From when i can remember we had some sort of holden station wagon, then we had a tarago then we had 4WD's, as there was 5 kids![]()
and now mum has a 2004 Statesman and dad has the 4WD
when i came along there was the Sunbird, it got smashed so we got a VN then a Barina came into the mix then upgraded the VN for a VT & upgraded the Barina for an Astra and i got my licence and bought a VL then someone stole, stripped and burnt her. So then i got me another one.
My old boy haad a 79 HX ute, column shift 3 speed manual and
My old girl had a 83 Toyota Tarago Auto.
I own a VL it seems like my first is worth more than thiers.
hmm well lets see...
mum and dad - vk wagon, shitty pintara wagon ,vn exec sedan, vp exec, EB gli sedan wagon, vt exec wagon, VX s pack sedan (love it so much), ra rodeo
Me - Vp exec wagon, eb Gli sedan
Nan and grandad - eh sedan (loved that car so much) skyline wagon, eb gli sedan, 2003 astra
so i would say that i grew up with holdens and im sure thats part of the reason i love my holdens so much, probley explains why im not a fan of fords as the only ones we have had have had nothing but problems with.
