hey all thinking of purchasing a dirt bike in like a month and i have no clue of what i should buy.
ive ridden a mates ttr125 and it just seem sluggish at top speeds and kinda slow. had good down low torque though.
so i want something bigger than a 125. what do u all think i should get? any brands better than others? o yea needs to have low down torque for good acceleration or is top speed better?
what do you want to do with the bike? are you going to be doing trail riding or track riding?
If your going to ride tracks
125/250f
250/450f
Trails/bush
Xr250, XR400
Anything 4 stroke really for bush/trails
bush and trails mostly
All my dirt bikes have been two stroke....come to think of it so have all my road bikes...
The best dirt bike I had was an IT 250...they were so close to a motocross bike back then than anything else... I dunno what the latest crotch rocket is these days though... Four stroke dirt bikes IMO are boring I've ridden a KLR Kwaka 600... It was only good for mono's...too heavy to throw around off road!!!

if ur gunna go trail and bust, dont look past the XR-250 to XR-400
i have both bikes and to tell u the truth, ive ridden a few diff bikes out in the forest and the XRs shit all over just about everything
bairly any maintenance. go good, not too heavy
yea was thinkin of the xr250. mate that got the ttr125 now wishes he spent that 4g on an xr250
i just bought an 88 model yz 250 for 500 bucks, watercooled and all. powerband is rather viscious though!
LOL !!! they make 125 Four strokes... ? I could run faster with a walking frame...!
Two stroke bikes will beat any four stroke bike of the same capacity engine.
He... he... he... I remember my CR 80 when I hit powerband the first time I rode it.... I was holding on by my fingernails and couldn't get my weight forward to release the throttle...our shed wall came in handy for stopping...LOL

. But I also have a IT 490L, which I'm sure is Satans bike of choice. Deadly in every sense of the word. But oh so fun if it doesn't kill you
road legal too
I've never ridden a 490... must be fun trying to keep it in a straight line with the front wheel on the ground...Originally Posted by foammedia

Green sunglasses holder/lower dash bits...Air-con and assorted engine bay parts.

It just sits in the shed, has been for about 10 years but Ion my P plates I rode it everywhere street/bush/motorcross tracks!: ).Originally Posted by sixshooter
I couple of things I remember were.
Once giving my friend a ride on it. He rode it down the the end of my street turned around and came back towards me at moderate throttle, I could see him moving closer and closer to the gutter then all the sudden the bike shuddered and he moved away from the gutter, he pulls up and says WHAT's UP with this bike, you can't stear it. I told him, that would be because the front wheel was half a centimeter off the ground the whole time under you got scared of the gutter and backed off. That was pretty normal behaviour.
One day I had it flat stick down a lime stone road (160km/h) went over a light rise in the road hit a 8?cm lump of lime stone, that was enough for it to lift the front wheel right up under power and send me all the way down the other side of the hill on the back wheel @ 160 :P.
Another day a kid on worked PE 250wanted to race me, straight line drag, limestone road. I said ok. Lined them up, I selected 3rd gear dumped it and heaps of revs RINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN 4th RINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN 5th RINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN........ 160km/h
Looked behind me and the PE was about 60-80 meters behindlol the race was only like 200 meters long. Left a HUUUGE trench in the lime stone road too. Few times I almost killed myself with accidental monos almost into the sides of cars and stuff like that around town, which is why I retired it in the end. It was also serious cop bait, single cylinder 500cc two strokes with just the one straight through muffler are just a bit loud. Loud enough that you could hear it riding around anywhere within the boundries of my town on a still night (5km radius). Never rode a RG 500, but did ride a RZ 350
. I never rode a CR 500 or KX 500 either but would have liked to, a fat guy in my town used to race a CR 500 and even with him on it it used to haul down the main straight and shake the ground like a train going past!. The KX prolly would have another 10hp over my IT. My IT has straight through muffler, reeds, ported reed cage, uni filter, ported barrel, shaved head, still has the stock expansion chamber though. The modern big 4 strokes are a bit weird, everyone says they are so fast but I've seen people riding them flat stick and really I'm pretty sure the IT would hand them a flogging to remember

yeah well i have a CT 110. go the postie bikes!
1995 Manual HSV Clubsport

My first bike was a YZ490J. That was one beautiful bike to ride with a crazy powerband and arm stretching acceleration in all four gears. No dirtbike seemed as good after that.
go KTM. wicked ride.
i used to have a 94 wr 250 2 stroke.it was good in the bush trails and would pull fourth gear power monos without a worryA new 450 four stroke wouild be cool though
I have a honda lead... does that count?
thing is, ive ridden a few CRs out in the forest, a 125 and a 500 and for trail riding the xr250 and the xr400 kick the crap outta them, easier to ride, easier to hill climb with, if u drop the 2 banger outta powerband then are useless for hill climbing
wr's have a wide ratio gearbox that has heaps of low down for climbing hills with plenty of grunt up top too.sure four strokes will chug along up hills but ya gotta go hard and keep the two strokes in the band.depends what ya want i suppose but i used to get a rush off roarin up hills flat out
yea i wanna four stroke as it kinda needs to be quiet to go riding in the bush near me at night.
so your selling a yz 250 two stroke
Dude, WTF, this thread is like 3yrs old. How the **** did you dig this up?????
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
