Default Does anyone know this phone number?

    I've had a few calls before off this number: (02) 8404 2296

DON'T RING IT! I reckon it's another tactic by someone to scam money somehow by phoning you quickly, hanging up and obviously by the time you get to your phone it says 'missed call' and naturally you want to call back to see who it is if you don't recognise the number.

It's that natural thinking someone is trying to exploit! So don't ring that number or you might get hit with a very high call cost.

I want to find out who owns that number! Does anyone know?

On the other hand, I want to make a complaint but the only basis I got is that this particular number is harrassing me (my mum and my brother got the same number too! Both missed the call because it was too quick).

And who would I normally complain to about this? Telstra? Telcommunications authority? Advertising authority?

    Help us out guys!

Well, i think i heard something about this sort of thing happening last night on the news, its exactly what you think, a scam. They ring you, you miss it, then you call back. Get told to call another number for your unique code to claim a prize, takes em 5 minutes to give you the code, and charge you $3 a minute for it
I used to play sports. Then I realized you can buy trophies. Now I’m good at everything.

I heard a similar thing on the radio where a computer dialed peoples mobiles even at 3 in the morning, get you to call another number to claim a price, charge $$$ per minute and keep you waiting until you hang up.

Yeah DON'T bother to ring back, they think they are clever B*stards trying to trick unsuspecting people. LOL we suspect everything and everyone tho lmao.

Its like those ads on tv "your lucky day" where they ask a stupidly easy question and you get a chance to win a prize but costs $5 per SMS.

iPods play MP3's or CD's. And you have to answer 20 questions at 5 bucks a pop or something.

If you won it'd be cheap, but they'd make a killing.

Its usually screened during programs like Neighbours, Big Brother, etc, so the target audience are your teenagers and young adults, so there is a degree of naivity hence they do the quiz and end up spending alot of money without even realising it.

    Wish I'd thought of it...

    Hey Guys Gals,

I got the same call (i think) it was from 02 84042236 on the 23/5/06 @1.30pm.
    I have a Nokia N70 on a 3G network with Telstra.
It hung up that quick i didnt get a chance to answer it.
    I didnt ring back.
so i rang back on another phone and a message comes up saying " Hi, did i just call you?..." He rambles on about winning a $40 prize and you then need to ring a 1900 no. with a unique code ring the no. get the prize...
So yes it is a scam.
I also have a private no. so who knows how they get it. Ive had my no. since '97 and has allways been a private no.
They may even ring random no.s? It might be worth it for them.

So maybe if we can make a record of all of these no.s?

This whole thing reminds me of the Simpsons when Homer gets that telemarketing scam machine (ie send 1 dollar to Happy Dude for eternal happiness). Such a great episode!

That episode is gold, chief wiggam tells homer exactly what wil happen if he gets caught yet he still takes the damn thing.

My house got the phone call about an hour after the thing was on the news the other night, i was standing next to the phone whehn it rang so my instant reaction was to answer it cos my old man runs a business from home, and they played the message so i just hung up

Default Add 02 8404 2203 to the list.

I received a similar call from the above number today.

However, I am scottish, so I never ring back a number unless I know who it is.

If they want me badly enough, they will ring back.

If you have ever bought a lottery ticket in a shopping centre for a car and put your number down on the ticket without ticking the little box next to the fine print (if you could even read the fine print and see the box it's that small). That's how they add your number to a database as well as a ton of other ways.

There is a market for all this personal information with companies buying and selling all kinds of data about people with the peoples knowledge.

A lot of places also just randomly call numbers thus getting through to private numbers. I have a private number as well and have gotten plenty of telemarketers calls.

I hope that the "DO NOT CALL" register before parliament becomes a reality. I will will definitely be putting my name and number on it.

Yes ive bought the odd lotto ticket for a car! That would make sense ...
    They are all scammers then!

By getting the word out there about this we can inform everyone not to get sucked in!
