    Question Are Scanners Legal???

Hey ppl, you know those police scanners that you can listen to over the internet, does anyone know if its legal to listen to them.
A mate of mine told me it was legal, but surely listening in on what the police are doing would be illegal. Aside from the fact that i have better things to do than listen to the 5 O's all day id still like to know what the go is?????

    fair enough then.

With the radar scanners how can they be legal to use but not to have??
or can they be used for something that is legal?

yeah was also wondering about that surely all the dodgy FCUKERS out there would use them for that sort of thing.

Yep, police scanners are perfectly legal to use, like everyone here has said (you just can't use any information you hear over the scanner for your onw or someone else's benefit)

Radar detectors are a different kettle of fish, I think they are still legal in Western Australia but if you are caught in a car equipped with one in any other state expect trouble..

so like they ones that you can buy from like dicksmith or harveynorman that have programed into them all the fixed cameras and red light cameras plus alert to you to other radars, would be illegal to use .

If it's the 'Road Angel' or whatever ones they are legal, they don't actually advise of mobile radars, etc just the ones that are listed

i heard that its fine to listen in on police scanners but not use the information to your personal advantage [ example at a street race, hearing the cops are coming you can get done for scattering ] ....if that makes sense. basicly i've heard that you can listen in but you cant use the info.

lol mine got confiscated out of my mates car a while back when his car got FULLY searched. I had to go into the cop shop and say why i had it what i used it for etc etc etc.. He then said he had no doubt in his mind that i used it to evade police and that if it was ever found in mine or anyone elses posetion it would be confiscated. Supposibly with its totally flat batterys he turned it on and it went straight to the cop channel. The thing is also that it is a bitch to get onto the police station so i wanna know how he did it.

My old scanner had a Police button you had to push to scan the preset police channels, I always carry scanner in the car and haven't had any grief, then again I've never had my car searched before...

Yeah they are legal, The emergency services and most private companies now use digital trunking which is where the conversation jumps to random channels for the best reception, if you have an oldschool scanner you will only hear one side of the conversation, so if you get one make sure it can listen to trunked networks.

We have them in our work cars, I always have them tuned into police channel. It's good to hear whats going on, gives you a rough idea of how many jobs they do around here aswell.

Dick Smith, Tandy, etc all stock the Uniden Bearcat range of scanners, otherwise you can get Icom ones on Ebay that are pretty good as well..
