After using my pc for a while, she tends to literally shut down at random times. I have thought maybe the CPU overheating, but the side case is off, and I tried pulling the case out a bit from the desk for extra ventilation, and the fan is connected/operational..
Other than that, I have scanned for Virii on Trend Online - only found small tedious shit in the Temporary Internet folders, since cleaned them. No Go!
It's extremely frustrating, downloading/burning/watching movies, whatever, it just shuts down at RANDOM times!
Any Suggestions?
remove the graphics card and reinstall it, especialy if its lower end they tend to "fall out" of palce
That's not true...
It sounds like a problem with your power supply, smell at the fan vent near where the power cable plugs in - it may or may not smell a little burnt, it might also be a bit hot around there and the fan might not be running correctly. Anyway, best way to test is to get another power supply (make sure it has the right connectors) and plug it in, fire the computer up and see if you have the problem anymore.
Check if power supply is overheating? also if you have recently installed any new hardware check if it is causing any conflicts.....
it could also be drivers to, check them before u rip shit outand try a thing called memtest 86+ (google it)
you have a virus. It's called Windows.

haha, I like it minux. I think I'm partially interested in googleOS
I can 99% guarantee you it's the power supply - not software related.
or the power regulating capacitors on the motherboard, this is a very common fault in pc's built around a certain time, and takes 2 seconds to check. cut a long story short, a chinese capacitor manufacturer stole the beta formula from another company for the electrolyte, and then pumped out millions of cheap capacitors that motherboard manufacturers snapped up in bulk. ive diagnosed a number of machines with this issue which the client had taken to numerous repairers and got a "duh" on. the boards with this issue are manufactured from 1999 to about 2002. they leak after 18 months or so and look like this -

the wikipedia page with more details -

most affected brands of motherboards in australia were MSI, EpoX, ECS + a number of nasty cheapo brands
as stated above it could also be a power supply, having repaired thousands of machines in my time, id say quite unlikely to be viral or malware, they kind of manifest themselves in other ways these days
good luck!
right hand click on my computer - properties, and click on advanced tab up the top. Down the bottom under startup and recovery there should be a settings button, click that and remove the tick from automatic restart, that should give you a blue screen error message instead of restarting. Look up the stop error code on the net and it should be able to tell you what the problem is.Originally Posted by tr3nt
