Default A quick spray at the NSW RTA

I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this...

Just looking on the NSW RTA website for information about plates when I come across this page:
    http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registrati...pricelist.html

Now, can anyone see anything wrong with this??

If I want a "personalised" plate, that is, ANY deviation from the plate the RTA want to give me as next off the list, even if it fits a standard format, they will charge me $60 plus PER YEAR just for having them press a standard format (with changed characters) plate??

Give us a break for f*cks sake. You want me to pay $60 and up a year for something you might have to repress ONCE? I'll wear a once-off fee for pressing a non-sequential plate, but annually?? Come off it.

No wonder some people here leave their cars registered in other states. You dont see many NSW plates permanently in Melbourne or Brisbane after all, do you?!

    [/rant]
Oh the wonderful things I could do to my car...
if I had more money, no kids, no wife, no second car, no job, no rent, nowhere to be, didnt need food, didnt need beer...damn.

the govt. should be providing services to citizens, not profiteering from them by hiking prices of monopoly services they control.

and the thing is that they did hike the prices, they only brought in that new money making scheme a little while ago...well just after we got our personalised plates haha...but yeah they try and charge you for any kind of self expression they can.
Need some parts for my VH 253:
Green standard steering wheel...Green lower B-pillar covers.
Green sunglasses holder/lower dash bits...Air-con and assorted engine bay parts.

couldn't agree more with you family guy. it's just a blatant revenue raiser. there is absolutely no justification in a yearly fee for just standard personalised plates. i am going through the same problem as you

I was lucky that I got my semi-personalised plates long before they bought this in (about 12 years!) but was trying to get some of a smiliar format for my wife, only to find the new fees. Maybe she should change her name to suit the ones we have? Whats a good womens name that starts with a Z?!

I guess my main gripe is: why charge annually for a standard plate that is out of sequence? I think in this case the ACT has it right.

The RTA is the NSW government's biggest money raising racket EVER, in fact I'd say they're the biggest government owned criminal organisation in Australia. If it was just a normal private company they'd be charged with fraud and the owners forbidden from ever owning a business again.

I hear you loud and clear Familyguy.

I let my old VK run out of rego while i was rebuilding it (still under construction).
I went to get the plates off it put on to the VX some 12 months later and was told that because the VK had run out of rego and gone pass the 3 months after, the plates had been cancelled and i needed to get new ones.
So I take the old plates in to the RTA and hand them over, only to be told that as they will be new plates I must now pay the full fee for get the plates, just as if i'd never had them.

To me this is the best case of revenue raising that I've come across. Giving up perfectly good plates just to get freshly printed one's back that are exactly the same, just costing me money each year now. (the plates where white on black, which at the time of getting the orginal plates didn't have a yearly fee)

Do we want to talk about personalised plates do we? Here in qld we have to pay 400+ for a once off custom.

If we want just letters, we're looking at a once off fee of 2300.

I think you guys have it easy.

    Who cares?

In both cases the government is ROBBING us. It's nothing short of highway robbery, hell we should have to pay no more than $30 for ANY pair of plates. I doubt the metal they use to make them costs that much and it certainly wouldn't cost much to get some dude to arrange the letters on the press and pull the lever twice. 2 minute job.

Cars are the government's way of wringing every single cent they possibly can from us.

But on the other hand its a personalised plate. If the government wanted I'm sure we wouldn't have them at all.

Hell I'm happy to pay for something that I want. If you don't want ASX-594 then don't pay the money? I don't see what the problem is. 60 dollars a year, what would this money go too? Roads? like our registration money? It's not a big deal, 60 a year is 5 dollars a month. About 15c a day.

I think if we're going to sook about getting ripped off by the government, theres plenty more obvious places to look for first.

    You completely ignored my point

I paid $430 for a hand made piece of hammered, lathed bronze fine-tuned to sound fantastic - that's only one of the cymbals that I use when I play drums.

There is no justification to charge someone $400 for a bit of painted tin or whatever they make numberplates out of. It is a metal plate with letters and numbers punched into it, at the end of the day a speed camera can still pick it up and identify the vehicle and isn't that what number plates exist for in the first place?

My whing was the fact that i had the plates from my old car, but had to handed them in and get new ones pressed. When they could have just seen the old one's and said on your way.

NSW plate fees range from $60 to $500 a year.

Plates should definitely only be a one-off charge. My last car, the SV6, came from the dealer with red plates on it. I didn't ask for them, they were already there (used car). Sure enough though, come rego time, the RTA billed me $70 just so I could keep them there... or I could have paid probably around the same amount and had new yellow plates made up... it just doesn't make sense. Thieves.

well, they could just put more speed cameras in to get the money.

i think charging for personalised plates is fair enough. it isnt' an essential thing and is purely for self indulgence.

Perhaps my original intent got a little muddied, but the underlying feeling is right.

Its a piece of metal. Its probably $1 worth. There's probably $15 labour. Once. They're not worth $60 a year. Maybe if you want something really out there like "W*NKER" or a really personalised plate, but not a tricky combination of standards like many people have.

    GOZ.00M anyone??

Ok so i have just had a look on the website, and i can't believe black and white plates are now $220 one-off fee + $90 annual fee.

The last time i got mine done it was only a few $$ more for black and white over getting bog standard yellow (which i think are $39 one-off fee)

Am i reading it wrong? – Products and Pricing
Anyone got any further info on this?

Also yes i realise this thread is from 2006, but it was the most relevant after doing a search.

EDIT: Ok found it - SLIM WHITE - EBONY BLACK CHARACTER are $99 one-off fee

That's the problem around here... You get flamed for not searching and when you do search you get flamed for thread digging.

Just to set the record straight, the RTA handed the number plate side of things to private enterprise some years back. It's private enterprise ripping us off, the RTA is just collecting the fee for them.

But it's the government letting them! As soon as something is privatised, it's about profit and not about service level. Public Transport in Victoria is a PRIME example. I'm all for Governments selling off non-essential services, but essential services, such as utilities, public transport and infrastructure should remain in public hands! The problem there is the administration, when it's done by government, isn't as efficient. But at least the service levels are the priority rather than the profits.
