My mods come from working my shitty job. I work about 10 hours a week at my servo making f*ck all, but I'm a full time Uni student..
I live with my parents and don't have to pay for anything. So everything I earn is basically disposable income.
It all goes towards my car, going out, food and saving. All of it..
if your parents ever adopt, let me know!Originally Posted by GLD-086
Saving is the key, although at times i have borrowed money off my parents or my sister, but its always been paid back for cars. Then you just use what you have to get other things (sold one of my cars to get new rims and a new gearbox for another)
now i clear about 1000 a week after tax, so i have a little bit more to spend, although i save alot for rego and insurance etc.

ok, first car - VK Wagon - Loan - never modded, didn't have the money. Got cd player, 6 inches and 6x9's with initial loan... had for 3.5 years, drive into the ground, couldn't afford repairs...(Only "mod" is did was to buy pursuit rims, sand paper, and spraypaint, "found" some tyres and got them put on and balanced through a friend, total cost: 60 bucks...
second car, another loan, consolidated first one, bought VR Wagon, same deal, completely stock, no mags etc... ended up sinking $5,500+ into her within 18 months for stupid annoying repairs, never got to modify anything, finally got stereo (out of VK) installed 6 weeks before i traded her, by a mate for $70 bucks... had also acquired a twin 12" sub box, with half rooted Jaycar subs for $80, got this put in also...
Ended up trading for a decent price (hehe, the VR is STILL sitting in the car yard after being traded in August last year! poor girl, paint WAS good, now the roof is looking the worse for wear...)
So this time I got the VY, and made sure got mags first thing with initial loan payment. also got new stereo installed, subs wired properly, cali gold wiring kit, shitbox amp, same old crappy subs, but upgraded to a kenwood mp3 player and kenwood 6x9's...
then with an interest free period, only a few months ago... I got a new 1000w amp, new kicker 12" subs, CB radio and antenna and all installed...
Sooo... have the VY and mags and good stezza, but paying $280 a fortnight on it, and not including the couple thousand owing on the Card...and will be paying it for another 6 years at that rate...
understandable wishing I'd stuck with the VK and not gotten more loans hey... :P
i'm in the same boat (mine might be sinking though) as you. i work part time, but my parents support me still. if i want to do anything to the car, i have to pay for it myself though, unless it is a mechanical repair that is required to keep it on the road, then sometimes mum and dad will pay for it.Originally Posted by GLD-086
the next car will be paid for with a loan, and won't need modifying because it will be good from the showroom floor![]()

thats a damn good question tr3nt, i dont really know how the hell i afford to do the stuff i do to my vs....i only work about 20-25hrs a week casual at a servo and study at college part time.
but when i want to buy something for the vs or do something to it i always seem to work out a way of making it happen. budgeting an income is a good start though, i learnt how to do it the the ultimo hard way when i moved out of home at 17 and had barely $100 a week to live on (which rent had to be paid out of).
every thing i have got for my car i've paid cash![]()
it helps me save $ too because then you can bargin the price down
When I was working I _easily_ had 350$ spare a week to spend after paying bills and so it was easy to buy anything I wanted, now I can't even afford 1 liter of fuel and my car isn't even at my house![]()
Yeah.. im thinking of $100 away per pay packet. I get paid fortnightly, so for me to take out say $200 would be leaving myself broke.
so far the only way im modding my car in the near future is Tax Return = Lowering Job.
I did a bit of reasearch and basically did all my mods for cheap. The vr had a catback exhaust when I got it but that was all. Since then Ive given it a cold air intake (i bought 10 in a bulk lot and actually made over $200 profit by doing this) that payed for some 8mm silicone plug leads and some super four spark plugs. I polished the throttlebody myself with sandpaper and every spare moment I had over a period of 2 or 3 days (cost $0) found a chip on ebay basically tuned to what I had so I got that for $70 and a few other bits and pieces here and there. Its not much but I have beaten an ss up the gippsland dragway b4 and I have video footage to prove it.
As far as I am concerned it just saving what you can, patience and doing your homework. It also makes you real proud when you beat a v8 in you v6 knowing that your the one who did the work![]()

haha, I knew it wouldnt take long for someone to ask. As soon as I can figure out how to put the footage from my video camera onto my computer I will.
I got a nice tax return (go and see a GOOD accountant). I have all the mods I want for the moment (for this car anyway)
*18" rims
*extractors and catback 2&1/2
*system
*customized interior (vh sl/e seats mmm comfy)
*Heaps of berlina bits and peices
*Tacho dash
* debadged then rebadged
I've not left anything unmodified
Allot of the stuff was right place right time with spare cash (doesn't happen often). The rest I have gotten off ebay for a steal or paid full retail for.
You'll get there, it didn't happen overnight for me I've had this car for 12 months now.
Modifying your car is like a drug, once you start you get hooked.
Might need to start a support group M.A. modifiers anonamous lmao.
There are so many familiar stories here......
I was the same......but i was lucky enough to secure an apprenticeship.....another tip, when you can, buy a house!
It will create a far better financial position for yourself...
