    Default Seat Position

AS a regular road user I get to see a lot from the heights of the front seat of an ambulance. So I had a couple of queries that many of my colleagues talk about.

Why do many guys in cars they've done up or a jusr plain too for that matter,
have the seat so far back and the back of the seat angle down so far so they can hardly see over the dash?

I'm sure it can't be good for your back or even your car control. From a crash perspective, it actually casues you to submarine under the dash and makes you more likely to be trapped and fracture both your thighs.

Secondly what is the go with drving whilst leaning on your centre console? Do you all have scoliosis ( a medical condition with curvature of the spine)? It can't be too easy to control the car either.

Admittedly there seems to be connection with red car seat protectors and these positions, but it just doesn't seem the most practical nor safe way to sit in a car.

(No offence intended to don't arc up about it either)

Stretcher... apparently your correct about red cars.... i seen in a survey a few years ago that people who buy red cars get more traffic offence tickets that drivers with other colours... i'm sure there are not more red cars on the road than other colours...

You can afford to have the seat back fully if you're in an auto. My ex gf used to put her seat back further from my driving position. She's 5'1 and I'm 5'7.. She used her toes to brake and accelerate..

For me I sit comfortably and can see the road, but I lean on my centre console or have my arm on the door trim.. Just how I drive.. I also have my steering wheel down as low as it goes..

Going from auto to manual is a bit of a shock though.. From fully back to fully forward..

i had my seat forward... then my friends told me that i sit to close and if i ever have a crash my knees will smack into the dashboard and shatter... i got scared so now i put it back further and i hope my seatbelt will keep me from breaking my knees! true story

If you sit back a bit further you are also less likely to smash your head on the steering wheel (woodgrain wheel anyone?). I'm 187cm so I need it back pretty far but my missus she puts it back just for the hell of it.

Sitting with the arm on the center console is known as the "gangsta lean".

i find it so funny how people are automatically catagorised as 'gangsta' or 'wannabe gangsta' just by the angle of their seat/way they lean... i agree they look stupid and it is a safety issue if your seat is reclined too far but leaning on the centre console? unless theyre using the passenger door to lean on, or smoking out the back window while driving youre so sik, i dont see the massive issue... the ulehs are funny laugh at tho...

another thing to consider is that having your seat back can reduce your acceleration. I read somewhere about a guy shaving a fair bit of time off his 1/4mile time simply by slidign the seat forward, allowing him to depress the accelerator the whole way.

    Thats gold.
I like to have my seat fairly uprite and yes i do lean on the centre console sometimes (specially on long trips) Its a comfort thing. Im preety short and find it hard to get a good seating position where i have both my hands and feet where i want them.

I like to sit alllmost upright, with hands and feet both a safe and maximum control distance away from their respected controls...

however i find that every morning when i go in my vp to go to work, the seat angle is back further than is comfortable! so i adjust it up and away i go....

    this repeats every morning!!

I think every time i give the gas a bit of a punch my seat must angle back a little more each time!

I often drive with my left elbow leaning on the center console, I allways have really. I drive 70km round trips to uni and back each day, in an auto, and it's just kinda come natural. I don't see it as a safety issue at all, honestly who drives with two hands on the wheel at all times?

I swear its really called the "gangsta lean", meaning leaning on the center console with the other arm holding the top of the wheel Vin Diesel in FnF style LOL. Its an American thing.

I don't get the seat reclined back thing myself but each to their own, I've always adopted an upright driving position using the wrists touching the top of the steering wheel method to get the correct position and I find that comfortable enough even for long driving stints..
