A TEENAGED boy will be the first to face new laws and tough penalties aimed at car thieves who run from police pursuits.
The 16-year-old was arrested at 10.30pm last night following a chase through Mt Barker after police spotted him driving a suspected stolen Magna.
"The driver allegedly failed to stop and police pursued the vehicle through backstreets until the driver and passenger dumped the car on Adelaide Rd,'' a police spokesman said.
The Adelaide Hills teenager was caught nearby and will face the new charge of dangerous driving to escape police pursuit, as well as illegal use of a motor vehicle and drive in a manner dangerous.
The passenger, also a 16-year-old boy from the Adelaide Hills, was arrested and charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle.
The boys were bailed to appear before a youth court at a later date.
The new law aimed at fleeing drivers was introduced on Sunday, August 13, and carries a maximum penalty of five years jail.

About time something was done to stop the little bastards. Back in the old days they used to hang horse thieves.
the middle east remedy was to remove hands - simple; you'll never take another thing ever again..with your fingers anyway...
Good, That means they should do some time in real jail as well (not just juvie). Serves them right. I guess they still need to be sentenced first though...
I'm with tree cutter, but there was no mention of grand theft auto?

The article says he will be charged with illegal use of a vehicle too, which is the nice way of saying grand theft autoOriginally Posted by TheForgotten

It's nice to think it will happen with the new legislation, but I bet this guy doesn't spend any time inside.
I agree about letting the owner have a piece of him though. Same should go with speedsters and drink drivers
i cant say anything good about mt barker *shudder*
the problem is though, tougher laws wont stop it...
i know people who went away for a few years, then back in 6 months later for the same shit. A different approach is needed somehow.
castration?
erm, they are under18,norealjailtimewill beseen,maybe2 years ofjuvenlie that will be it...

max? that should be minimum
he will go to court get told blah blah dont do it again and he will be out as usual
when will cops wake up to car theives they have guns shoot them
problem solved![]()
The threat of 5 years jail is better than just a slap on the wrists, but even that will not be enough to deter a lot of thieves. It really bugs me when you read in the news about a repeat offender (for whatever crime, not just car theft or speeding) that gets let off with a warning and a fine, or probation.
Thats true, but slightly unjust if you happen to be innocent!Originally Posted by nizmovk

they'll just cry to the judge 'im sorry judge,we where just out for some and we fled from the cops as they were intimidating' judge says 'oh you poor people just dont do it again ok'
Good to hear, although if i were the owner of the car, i'd like to deal some punishment myself.
Hmmm... I think its a great idea, something had to be done about car theives and they deserve what they get! However... On the other hand, If you send a 16 year old to jail you're potentially making things worse, by the time they get out they would be more inclined to follow a life of crime because whilst in jail they would pick up alot of stuff, also ruines any chace of living a 'normal' life, job prospects etc etc. That being said they do the wrong thing they should be punished accordingly, just not sure if jail is the right way. Maybe some sort of community service and fines. But im talking massive hours of community service and fines which would pretty much wipe any teen out. That would deter them, second or third offence then jail would be more appropriate, but still i reckon juvie... anyway, everyone has thier own opinions. Just wish there weren't people like that in our society
But wait... There's more!!
But that's not all!!!

...What if there was some way to teach these kids respect for others property, and for cars themselves, and that they can own their own car they can be proud of. I tend to agree- lock 'em up and it generally makes the situation worse. They become better crims, and have absolutly no respect when they come out.
they dont have respect now so no loose no gain lock em keep them off the streets
they needa bring back the death penalty 4 those who steal n burn em or just steal n strip em. otherwise u got no chance of gettin ur car back
i think death is a little too severe... in most cases really. its something that cannot be undone. a car can be fixed and some forms of rehab are far more fruitful.
someone mentioned before that imprisonment makes them more ignorant...very true...how about keeping them in society and having a good behaviour program, curfews and community service for a couple of years.
its 2 years community service for getting caught with a fake ID...
yer sorry does sound a bit harsh i take that back, but i rekon the owner of the car should be aloud to do what ever they want to the theif, aswell as a jail sentence
if laws where stricter the world would be a happier/nicer place
