Hitachi are making some good quality tools these days. Makita are still alright and the blue range from bosch are good.
Just keep clear of the really cheap crap.

Build Tuff " DE WALT " 18V CORDLESS DRILL 3 BATTERYS - With Hammer 13mm Chuck - Top Notch i Am a 2nd yr Sparky and this is a drill to go the distance,

I like Hitachi and Hilti but damn expensive for an apprentice in there 18 V Range

Matabo,Festool,Panasonic for some stuff - Makita,Bosch,AEG,Milwake,Black & Decker, milwaukee are cheaper if you want something else with your voucher. Forget GMC or cheapo china crap.

Get the Dewalt Tools For your trade - include the hammer of course $600 - $650 I Did and best thing i have ever brought tool wise Thanks Government for us elec apprentice TFYT

i use the panasonic battery drill, it's servicable, as in everythign on it is replacable. i havnt burnt a motor out on the battery drill yet, it keeps going, and going and going. about the only thing i have had to do is replace the 3 pin plug cause i ran over the moulded one in the sissor lift.

as for hammer drill, you should be suplied one if needed on the job,
14.4 is a good size, when drilling up for ages the 18v stuff does tent to get heavy. the 14.4 volt stuff seems to be the right size.

stay away from makita, use to be good, now it's just crap they have
stay away from aeg stuff and atlas copco or atlas crapco
thats about it. i use my drill for all sorts of goodies, treat it right, and it will last you a few years,

    cheers

It depends on how often you want to use the stuff. For a sparky I expect a drill would be the main tool for the trade and get the best you can afford and keep a close eye on it because it might walk!

For other less often used stuff, I'd seriously look at some of the Chineese "crap". I agree that GMC is largely rubbish but if you are only going to use it for 15 min once in a blue moon it could do the trick fine.

I paid $35 for a GMC 9" grinder for a specific job. 4 years on and countless jobs later it's still running fine - well ok it is starting to make a few bearing noises now. It has done a heap of very heavy duty work.

Furthermore, I ran a sheetmetal workshop for a while and GMC grinders were great. They lasted about 4 - 6 months (at $15 a time) running all day everyday. Makitas lasted the longest but needed brushes replacing at about the same time for approx 2/3 the cost. The real clincher was that nobody stole the GMC stuff because they thought it was rubbish whilst anything makita or metabo was lucky to see out a year.

Why spend a ton of money on something that most diy'ers will use once in a blue moon when you can get something that works just as well but 1/5 the price??? Just keep in mind they will not last as long.

    Cheers,
    Reaper

No Not all thats why you pay over $500 for a Drill inlcuding the hammer option,if you are a sparky you deffinetly would like the hammer option, your boss may supply you with a Hammer Drill 240V but if it is un avalible and a quick job is needed the DE WALT 18V will ease it thru not a worry.
    Cheers.

For drilling masonary I am yet to find anything that beats a Hilti. They cost a fortune but cut thru concrete + Reo like butter. I drilled over 100 7/8" holes thru a 10" slab and wouldnt' have been able to do the job without it.

1 tip though - the longer the drill bit, the easier it is to keep the thing square. I had one that was nearly 400mm long and 4 spades on the tip (doesn't snag on reo then) and 1 bit did the whole job.

    Cheers,

yeah don't get cheap crap. Get Bosch or some other decent brand. No point buy a new tool every year or so, just pay the price once off and 'hopefully' have it forever
