Fart pipes on the back of these rice cars are annoying me lately because not only is it bloody annoying hearing the cars race around the street, but the damn shit boxes set my alarm off.
Is the max legal noise level something like 90dB? There is one WRX that has a big fat fart muffler on the back that is incredibly loud. The loudest I have heard, it's rediculous. Surely these damn things are illegal? Everyone seems to have them stuck on the back of their cars even though most of them are gutless cars. Does anyone here have mates that have had a canary from the cops for noise pollution?
I've had a mate FINED for noise pollution, but not defected. He was revving his car.
To be defected it has to be over 90db when STATIONARY (or at idle) according to SA law atleast, but alot of these fart cannons go over that anyway... But they dont seem to attract the defects our commodores do...
Damn. At idle? So they can be vibrating the crap out of your windows on the house whilst in motion and it's acceptable?
Thanks for the info.
I think in NSW the REV it to a certain RPM and if over 90 or 96db's it is meant to be illegal. But this has to be done by a diagnostic test, which is usually the EPA up here...
I f***ing hate POS cars with exhausts louder, then some V8s.
My mate had an Auto N/A VL with an the exhaust was far too loud for it and made it sound like absolute shit.
I got a 4" Canon and it looks & sounds nice on My N13 pulsar, with hotdog inlcuded, sounds quite good for a 4 Banger and it when i want the real power ill just bring out the SS out the shed![]()
Cheers.![]()

lol 3,000rpm down here in vic at 90db at i think a 1980+ model car
and lol i refer to them as watermelon launchers
Ahhh. V8's. They can be excused entirely. The sound of a true V8 no matter the sound level is alright. After all, they are V8's.
I'm talking about tiny little weeny shit box 1.8 litre cars with massive fart pipes on the back which are about 1/4 the size of their motor or more.
/end rant.

I know what you mean, I hate shitbox ricers with loud, crap sounding exhaust! All noise and no go is just a joke. It's even worse when they are auto's!! They get that annoying droan about them - I think it's embarassing. I just blatantly laugh at them...
Gotta say, I don't find it quite as annoying on cars like WRX's which actually have the "go" to warrant the loud exhaust.
Like Clutchy said, the dB limit is different depending on the age of the car etc. Here in NSW, the EPA set their microphones up at a certain distance from the exhaust, then rev it to 4000 rpm, hold it, then jump off the throttle and let it go back to idle. If it exceeds the dB limit at any stage of that process, the car is illeagal. I used to always get done on the way back DOWN the rev range from popping/backfiring etc (in my younger hoon cars).![]()
If it's annoying you that much, I'd get his rego and report him to the EPA.![]()
mine sets off alarms but id honestly say i dont think its that loud at all![]()
Whats the go with Harley Davidson's?
They've got to have the loudest stock exhausts of any vehicle on the road, why are they not subject to a noise limit?

I used to have a car with a cannon muffler and was loud as ****. I was also running 15-22psi. Back pressure from a restrictive ehaust didn't really excite me that much...oh yeah, it was a 1.6L
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
wasnt a old ford laser was it 12v? :P
I've seen one of those with a cannon before, no supports and it was less than an inch of the ground, 500m later the event i was waiting for happened. sparks ^_^

In NSW (pretty sure it would be similar for other states), there are different noise limits for different types of vehicles. I.e. cars have a different limit to bikes which are different to trucks etc. Bikes are legally allowed to be louder than cars. Which is pretty stupid I reckon, cos noise is noise, no matter where it's coming from!Originally Posted by DARKVL
well for one thing its easier to fit more mufflers onto a car than a bikeOriginally Posted by davey g-force

My mate has a skyline with large exhaust, he tries to set car alarms off. He keeps a running total while driving through the carpark at uni (i know, what a ********)
90db seems pretty loud, i mean, the new HSV is limited to 74db for the ADR test (which is driveby), so at idle it should be quiet as all hell. Imagine a 90db car at idle, you'd be deaf by the time you hit 60km/h
1.3 litre corolla + huge cannon = noisy as! and does the BEST backfires ever!
