i think that means u have a short somewhere along the lines, check and clean terminals or cut the end of the wire off and strip the end again, or, there might not be enough contact between the wire and terminal

    or

how loud do you have it?

easy! the amp went into protection mode because it was being driven too hard.

Sounds right to me. I have a Sony 5 disc DVD system that does the exact same thing if you run it too long too loud and the amp gets too hot.

Sony may be more advanced than Sharp as mine displays "Protection" not just protect.

out of interest, how old is your sony system?

EDIT: dont worry, just read it was a DVD system, not a hifi

With mine I just have to wait until it cools down and starts functioning again.
For some reason it only seems to occur when playing tapes or when the video is run through it.

do you have the speakers that came with the system hooked up to it? reason i ask is i had a sharp system a while ago and my mums boyfriend thought it was smart to hook up different speakers... the thing went into "protect" mode and couldnt do anything about it. we had to send it in for repairs (under warranty) and it turned out the amp had basically crapped itself. if you are using the correct speakers and only 2 (or 4 if its a quad system) then do as above have stated. clean connections and make sure the speaker cables arent pinched by metal or something anywhere

same thing happens on my sharp mini hi-fi, its just the amp overheating cos u been pumping too hard, once its cooled down it will work perfect again, plus, it happens more often when u use underpowered speakers as the cabling gets hot and set it off too, says so in my manual.

check that the speakers you are using are the correct impedance. If you use speakers with an impedance that is too low, the amp will go into protection mode. Also remember that if you connect 2 speakers in parrallel that the impedance is halved. for example, if you connect 2 8 ohm speakers to one set of terminals, then the load to the amp is only 4 ohms. If the amp wants a minnimum of 8 ohms, then it will crap itself and go into protection mode.

    interesting wot u said
i had unplugged the stereo from the mains since monday.
so i gave it a go tonite and a surprise the demo thing popped up!!
but then i push the on/standby button to turn it on it span for a bit and then popped up wif PROTECT again!!!
anything to do wif speakers not plugged in this time? or tray problems?
