Exactly. Put yourself in their situation. The US has taken over Afghanistan and Iraq and is talking about action against Iran. The US is constantly making aggressive comments to any nation that doesnt play their game. If you had someone threatening you all the time you would try and attain anything you could to protect yourself too.

Its not feasable for the North Koreans to try and take over any other country. The US would destroy them if they tried. Not many people realise that the solution to the Korean war put forward by General Macarthur was to drop up to 50 nukes on both North Korea and China to basically wipe both countries off the map. The only reason this was not done is because Harry Truman dismissed Macarthur. The plan had wide support in the government and the public but Truman vetoed it. The North Koreans would be acutely aware of this and probably believe that the US would drop nukes on them right now if given half a chance.
Im not a complete idiot, some parts are still on backorder!

why should america be the only country with nukes? and don't say they can be trusted cos they can't, they'd drop nukes on us if it was beneficial to them.

i think the argument these days is why do they NEED nukes.

These days wars shouldnt be started and ended with big bombs like that, there should be trade sanctions and a financial rape of the country.

If anyone listens to trippleM (105.1 in melb), then youd hear spoon man talking to a bloke called Alex who is in the pocket of the US intel reports, he has the right idea (as you'd expect). If no more tests are done then this will be ignored, if however they decide to play funny biggers the idea of america sending troops in (not bombing), is likely because they can justify it to their people very easy (local targets in North koreas range).

Personally id love to see emperor short and stubby bombed into the ground, just him, not the country, not saying the whole country deserves what they are getting atm but they are a ****ed nation and things need to change there.

The thing is though, that north korea seem to be a pretty agressive country, and i dont know if they should have nuclear weapons. The US isnt going to use nuclear weapons against north korea, they know what sort of international outrage they would cause. Personally, id rather as few countries as possible had access to nukes, and n.k gaining them means one more country that could do something stupid and cause a huge 'nukefest'. At least with the US having nukes, we know that theyve been pretty good with them and have only used them twice in 60 years, and only to stop the overwhelming invasion by the japanese.

I'm not liking this one bit, considering I'm trying for the army next year, this is doing nothing for my confidence in global prosperity. I certainly hope there isn't any major militarisation in the Pacific/Asian theater any time soon, I'd hate to see the South Koreans and Japanese having to remain nearly permanantly mobilised...

The North Koreans are basically acting like any cornered lion would... The UN has got sanctions on them, their closest allies, Russia and China aren't willing to support them openly, and both South Korea, and Japan are two very upset neigbours atm. Nuclear weapons is two things for North Korea, it is a barganing tool, the sense 'If we don't get X, Y and Z, remember, we got Nukes and we aren't afraid to use them', and it is taking heat of their other 'Axis of evil' friend, Iran... These powers, including Syria, are playing a bit of 'Pin the tail on the donkey' with the would powers. Sad thing is, these countries are winning this war and it is making the western world look like a complete and utter joke...

i believe this is going to cause the exact same thing that happened with the cold war, the cuban missile crisses where the russians had nukes at cuba aiming at america. this was a huge stael mate and stoped when one country backed out for some reason, (i cant recall).

if a nuke is fired im not that botherd as there is not much u can do to stop it just hope it dosnt land closeand drive away as fast as u can

LOL, classic *remembers that episode of the simpsons* but on a serious note, i personally don't think north K can be trusted, also i think america needs to take a step back and not try and control every country when they can't even control their own, i think thats why other countries are gettin the sh!ts and getting these nukes basicially to stick it to the man (america).

also i don't think australia should be involved in anything the US does, if there so big and powerful why do they need us? it's only making aussies look like ass kissers and my ansestors didn't go off to ww1 and 2 just to be knowen as ass kissers.

Yeah man, sounds like a plan. Even with the threat of bird-flu, I was considering building a massive 'Fuhrer Bunker' on my farm, just like the Jerries did in Berlin in 1945. Plenty of firearms, grenades, some RPG's and lotsa ammo!

I agree, however, I will say that it is only the USA which has both the resources, the economic might, and the power of projection to keep rogue states in line. True, it pisses me off that America is basically playing 'World Police'. I must be said though, no one else could do a better job, unless of course your re-militarised the Germans and the Japanese, but then that would be giving a hornet's nest a real boot...

Yeah, Kennedy initiated the Naval blockade and Kruschev backed down when he saw that if he kept it going, firstly, his ally, Castro would fall from power, and secondly, the US had much better long-range nukes, plus very good strategic bombers, in order to obliterate the Soviet Union. Kruschev really didn't have a choice.. Both scenarios would've been far more damaging to Russia's security and prestige than backing out of a localised arms race.

Before Hiroshima and Nagasaki, no one truely realised the power of the Nuclear weapon nor it's long-term effects (Fallout, half-life ect ect). Plus, the Yanks were fighting an indominable enemy, the Japanese would simply not surrender, the Invasion of the Marcus Islands, Iwo-Jima and Okinawa didn't dent Japanese morale one bit, not even the massive invasion by the Soviet Union on the Japanese held Manchuria, Korea and Inner Mongolia swayed the Japs. US estimates pointed at a mainland Japanese invasion costing over 600,000 lives. When your a democracy reluctant on resorting to conscription, you can't really affort such attrition.... WWII was total war that still this day has remained completely unparalleled in scale, destructiveness, death, slaughter, anguish, genocide and sacrifice. In events like these, the ends will always justify the means.

Ha, lo and behold. My grandfather was in the DAK 'Deutscher Afrika Korps'. Yeah, he was an Itie, but served under the Germans between winter 1941 and January 1943. You never know, maybe your grandfather and mine exchanged fire at Tobruk...

I for one am extremely uneasy with the state of the world today. Not particularly the north korean nuclear test or any other particular event, but the culmination of everything that has occured in the last 5 to 10 years.

I believe that the USA is in a dangerous position with the power they have over every other single nation. Like a dictatorship, absolute power corrupts absolutely, and it will take multiple nations striking against America to put them in their place, and an unprecedented amount of death and devastation will be involved.

It is not a question of whether there will be a third world war, just a question of when, and I fear it will be while I am still young. That quote from Einstein sends shivers down my spine, as I believe it will pan out exactly that way. The next world war will see absolute destruction...

And in my opinion, there is a distinct possibility of extinction.
