Jetski Owners!!!!!

hey fella's, been looking at getting a jetski with some of my hard earned cash job money

looked at a sea doo gsk 1996 today. 2 stroke 110hp. ( yeh i know its old but shit its looks and runs like new) 17 geniune hrs, mint conditon ski and trailor. started perfect first time, new battery, compression test ok??.. was 150 psi. new leads plugs... um yeh everything seemed great which i know isnt always a good thing..

anyway has anyone out there from experience got any tips to look out for in general or mabey something about the this actual model?

oh yeh btw he asking $7500 which i thought was way overpriced for a 96' until i saw it. immaculate condition, but me thinks there's around 1000 banana's to play with

i have a jetski but i bought mine new and the seadoos seem to be a ski that breaks down...not as reliable as a yamaha...i may be slightly biased coz i have a yamaha

Just something to remember, bloody slow down when going past fisherman!!!! so many people on jetski's go flyin past leaving us with a dirty big wake to deal with....main rule of the river is to slow down when going past others and don't steal crabpots. you can go round flying past people but don't expect to have your tyres inflated when you get back to your trailer

I had a 97 Seadoo XP. Can’t say I would buy another Seadoo.

Things to look at:
If your model has power trim, VTS. Then make sure its working. There is 2 components, VTS control module & the motor. If you shop around you can get them for $600 each item. (that’s right $1200 to fix it) But they never last. 3 months for the motor, 6 months for the module is all I got.

Look for corrosion on the exhaust housing. There should be 4 sacrificial welsh plugs welded into the exhaust. This is the first place they corrode. They start with a pin hole that you will only see when running the ski with water connected. They slowly fill the ski up with water. Also check the gasket from the exhaust outlet to the exhaust housing. They let go there too.

The engines computer have a tenancy to go as well as the coils. While this didn’t happen to me I was warned about it by my Jet ski mechanic.

The Seadoo have a plastic pump sleeve. Which is good if you are in the habbit of needing to replace them because it is cheaper then a metal one like on other ski’s (ie Yamaha etc) but wear out a lot quicker. Check to see wear by looking down the pump at the back of the ski with your hands around your face and see how much light is getting past the impeller. Should only be a little. The bigger the gap the slower the acceleration and top speed. If you don’t know if its too much have a look at a new ski to compare.

Also Seadoo’s have to be run on fully synthetic oil, which it expensive to run, unlike other ski’s that can use TWC3 oils which is cheaper. They tell you that you have to run the Seadoo oil but you can run Castrol Biolube 100. If you shop around you can get it for $75 for 4 litres which is normally cheaper then the Seadoo oil.

I think that’s all I can remember at the moment.

if you can stretch your budget to the $10K mark you would be surprised how many good 2000-2002 yamaha gp1200 or gp1200r there are.
usually they are recently rebuilt and with 150hp+ and good reliability you cant go wrong.

at the end of the day make sure you get yourself a good jetski mechanic that you can trust because if its maintained well it will look after you if not the $$$$$$$

thanks boys heaps for the feedback.. opended my eyes up a bit!

the owner's looks loaded has all the boys toys 4 garages full of ski boats bikes quads...... he had paper work showing that he spent $650 couple of weeks ago: rewiring trailor plug, lights to l.e.d.s, um replaced corroded exhaust, leads plugs batt etc fuel oil flush etc etc.

im taking it for a run this friday so i'll give it a good test out. is 110hp weak?? lake and surf is close by so it will be a 50/50 of each.

19hrs beaut condition ski and trailor... wat price should i be aiming for? or should i keep looking for a later model??

If I remember correctly they went to a 120hp motor in 97. 10hp doesn't sound much but that enabled them to use a bigger pump which makes a big difference. You will gain a couple of mph top speed but the biggest difference is in acceleration.

Take the ski for a ride, but I suggest taking a different brand ski for a test ride before you purchase. Not only is a Seadoo more expensive to run and maintain, I found it required more effort to fight to hang on in the chop then other skis. In the ruff stuff I couldn't keep the power on because it would often land wrong and throw you off where as when I jumped on a mate’s GP1200 I could keep the power on with way less effort.

dont rush into any man.
take your time and research....
yamaha are know to be more reliable but seadoos are slightly more popular.
prices vary greatly between the two but the Yamaha GP1200, GP1200R, GP1300, GP1300R are known as very reliable and great skis.very popular and a lot around. good for surf, flat, everything. 2 seater, plenty of power

i looked around for about 9 months and after all the research i ended up buying new.....a good bank manager can help that
