Hey all, i just managed to get rd of some stupid email virus that was on my computer yeasterday, but now IE and media player, as well as a fair bit of other stuff isnt working. I try to open it and it says 'IE has encountered a problem and needs to close'. Does anyone know if i can do a full repair sing the windows cd or something like that?? Im at the end of my tether
when i get to the end of my tether, thats when i format my hdd lol. but before then, i try re installing what doesnt work. to re install windows software like IE and WMP etc, you have to go into control pannel, add rember programs, add/remove windows componets, and then just look for IE and WMP, you have to un install them by un ticking them, proceed and then install them by tiicking them.
edit: get rid of WMP and IE, and use Firefox and Winamp!!
Sounds like some registry damage has happened. U can try a re install if u r running XP. Just sellect the repair option during the setup phase and it should replace damaged files.
But it can be a long process with no result.
Best bet is to start over.
you could use windows system restore
START-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools--> System Restore
Select a BOLD date in the calendar a few days prior to the problems and then click ok.
Windows will shutdown and restart with the repair screen, let this go through and the computer will restart again.
Then test your programs that are not working.
What virus was it???

i agree with the system restore idea. it is completely reversable too.
also, use firefox. IE is evil.
not sure what to do about media player. windows f*cked mine up when i tried to install version 11 on a cracked windows xp copy. it didnt like piracy, so i couldnt install 11, and it wont let me go back to 10. sneaky bastards. anyways, i use another player called media player classic and it works great

now just a quick reminder guys, system restore is a haven for viruses, they usually make a backup of themselves in there or if you pick the wrong restore date, it was already there anyway when the backup was made.
its the first thing i turn off on a new install.
yeh, thats why i turned system restore off. I am running firefox at the moment, but i dont want to use winamp, it shits me to tears, just dont like it, prefer media player. I dont really need IE, but IE and WMP have the same problem i think, so i might have to do a repair from a windows cd, or try registry mechanic. I think that the problem may have something to do with the file wininet.dll, as it comes up inthe error report for both IE and WMP.
Im running XP prefessional with SP2 and i've already downloaded and reinstalled/upgraded both IE and WMP. For some strange reason, it lets me install the updates after doing the whole 'checking windows is genuine' thing, even though my windows isnt. ( I have paid for XP home, but running pro, coz amate installed it when he fixd my computer before.)
Think i might try to get a hold of the XP cd and go from there. BTW the virus was a form of W32 worm, so im definately not going through system restore.
do a google using the viruses name ... theres answers there to get rid of it ...
try the steps below. You will need your windows xp cd for this.
1. Click on START --> RUN
2. Type in SFC /scannow and click on OK
This will run through the System File Checker (Part of Windows). It basically check the windows file versions against the original files on the CD. If it sees any that have been changed it will prompt you to copy the original off the cd. It can usually take about 30min depending on the speed of your PC, etc.
