Please help sort my computer out!!

Hey guys sorry to bother you again about my computer. Can someone tell me how to format it and how to put important things back on (windows, things that make it work etc). Its really starting to give me the s***s all my games are jerky and pages are slow to come up. My anti virus is finding heaps of stuff (avast). So im think the best solution is to just start again. Unless anyone else has a better idea. Thanx.

Sounds like your current windoze installation is cactus.

Just some questions to help us help you:

1. What Windows are you running?
2. Do you have the Windows CD handy?
3. Do you know what hardware you're running or have all of the discs that came with your hardware?
4. Is your computer from a manufacturer (Dell, IBM, HP, Gateway etc.) or built from components (no branding on it)?

To format (assuming use of XP)

1. Shut Down Comp
2. Set CD as 1st Boot Device
3. Boot Computer with XP cd in drive
4. Press any key to enter setup
5. Follow prompts to install xp
6. Youll get option format drive, do a full ntsc format to ensure no sector issues
7. Follow rpomts to install windows

Windows xp home, yeah i have the dics for windows. What hardware do you mean?? It was built from a computer shop.

hardware inside the computer such as your sound card, video card, etc. Need a piece of software loaded after you install windows. this software is called a driver, it tells the computer what signals, instructions to send each piece of hardware. If it is a brand name pc, such as IBM, DELL, HP, COMPAQ, these manufacturers usually supply you with a RESTORE CD. On the restore cd, it has windows installed and all the drivers already setup, that you only need to insert the cd and it copies it all back to your computer, how it was when it came from the factory.

If you bought it from a computer shop, that custom builds pc's, they should supply you with the Windows CD, and drivers cd's for each component, such as Graphics card, Motherboard, and any other hardware cd's.

Once you have installed windows, you need to insert each of these cd's and install the drivers for that hardware (Instructions software). If they only supplied the windows cd, you can download the drivers from the hardware manufacturers website, but you will need to know what make and model for each hardware component.

cool thanx juzza and holdensupporter. Yeah well i have the windows, mobo and the vid card cd's. As for soundcard i dont think it uses one like sound blaster or anything, it only has that Realatek or whatever it is!! Wht things would you suggest that i backup Photos etc??

backup any important documents / photo's / anything that you would want to keep. back it up onto cd / dvd / usb pen disk / floppy disk, whatever you want to put it on, as you won't be able to get it back once you have formatted (at least not very easily).

Most sound cards these days are built onto the motherboard, so the driver for it will be on the motherboard cd, so you should be ok!!!

Make sure you have drivers for your modem or network card. Ive been caught out by that before. Reinstalled windows and didnt have the modem driver. So I couldnt get onto the net to get the driver! I only got around it by using an older modem I had to connect and get the driver for the newer modem.
