    Default Slick tyres

Recently i've been noticing quite a few cars with bald tyres on the road. I'm not just talking low tread, but ranging from slick to having the metal cords / canvas showing.

I'm just wondering how people get away with even letting their tyres get anywhere near this state. It's worrying to think what the grip on these cars is like in the wet!! IMO it's just too dangerous to contemplate running tyres like that.

Also, i've never seen any roadside checks to catch things like this (only been in Australia 8 months though). In people's opinion, should the Police or RTAs be targeting these sort of things more?

They dont have time for things like that mate, they are too busy pulling over the bigger threat a commodore that is too low or who has a loud stereo.

That did cross my mind! So someone with a stock as a rock Magna or suchlike can run their tyres until they just about fall off the rims.

I'd also be interested to know the statistics on car accidents and fatalities vs tyre conditions. Might be interesting, but makes you wonder why they don't crack down on it even more. I walk around the car park at work and reckon at least 1/3rd of the cars have tyres that are not roadworthy.

The scary thing for me is most taxi's on the road seem to be the worst offenders, if I need to catch a cab I'll always check the tyres on the cab and have refused taxi's in the past because of the state of their tyres, etc

Police should be checking this sort of basic 'neglect' at booze bus sites, etc and will occasionally run roadworthy blitzes, etc (one on taxi's at Melbourne airport recently) but I think more should to be done

Any motorist running around on bald or near bald tyres should face instant loss of licence as it's a basic but vital part of keeping your car in good condition
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?

In the UK, each bald tyre equals 3 penalty points on your licence and up to 2500 pound fine. For 4 tyres with tread under 1.6mm you would lose your licence. What are the penalties like here?

Yeah, the reason I started this thread is seeing two middle aged mums dropping their kids off at school each day in cars with absolutely bald tyres.

If the penalties for bald tyres (financial or otherwise) aren't harsh enough, people will more than likely just carry on with knackered tyres for ages because they can't quite afford to replace them, it's not really a priority, or they just don't even think about it.

It's generally recommended to replace tyres when the tread gets down to 3mm, as studies have proven that grip in the wet really decreases dramatically with tread depth less than that. For me it's almost incomprehensible that anyone would risk driving a car with a crucial component like tyres badly worn.

I see so many cars with IRS dumped with no camber cit and the inside of there rear tyres are metal. I was following a lexus that was dumped one night and it was throwing sparks all over the road. i seen the car again parked at the shops a few days later and it tires were metal.
