Default What makes a 'classic' car?

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on what makes a car a 'classic'? And what cars do you consider to be classic?

For me it's something that is good looking, and doesn't ever really look dated.
Something like the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, or even a mass produced car like the MK1 Golf GTI which has achieved something of a cult following in Europe.

IMO the age of the vehicle doesn't really matter too much, but for others that is the only reason a car is considered a classic.

Anyway, i'd be interested to hear everyones opinions.

yeah id say a classic car is one in which has stamped a print in the back of ur mind. someting that had style and performance no matter what the date of production. and like Shortstuff said cars that have been so popular they have created a cult following.

A car that keeps coming back, flagship cars like GT Falcons and Monaros. A Car that when you think of the of the name (Holden, Ford, Chrysler etc) you picture that one model in your mind before you think of anything else.

    Cars like:
    XY GTs
    HK Monaros
    Ferrari 308s
    Porsche 911s
    etc. etc.

When I hear the term 'Classic Cars' I automatically think of old school, pre 1970's. Although, that could now be stretched out to pre 1980's.

But, I do some newer cars, that I think will be classic one day, but at this point in time, for me it's older cars.

So many come to mind when I think of classic car..

    - Holden GTR-XU1 Torana
    - Holden SL/R 5000 Torana
    - Holden VL Calais Turbo
    - Ford Falcon GT-HO Phase # (pick a number they're all good)
    - Toyota AE86 Trueno GT-Apex
    - Mazda FC RX-7
    - Toyota 2000GT
    - Lamborghini Muira
    - Ferrari 250 GTO
    - Heaps more

As you can see I don't necessarily say the oldest cars are classic.. cult cars are classic too!

Lamborghini Diablo (the muira is a classic but the diablo deserves cult status as well i think)

imho a classic is a luxuary or sports car older than 5 years that has made some form of milestone.

I'd also consider cars like the original Mini and the Mazda MX5 classics because there was nothing else like them on the market at the time they were introduced, and they completely changed what people wanted from a car in some countries.
