Australia and NZ merger... your thoughts

They should remain two different identities, but sharing a common currency would be a good idea considering the amount of travel, and business that is done between the two countries. There isn't much difference between the value of the Aus and NZ dollars.

Australia and New Zealand have always been close, but that love/hate relationship makes the bond between us makes it stronger, and to remain strong they should continue as they are. Besides, in Australia we already have the Tasmanians to make fun of :P

Well, the way I see it is, it's been fine the way it is for so long now, why change it? The PM of NZ isn't keen on the idea, but I agree with Andy bout having the same currency.

On the one hand we would still be able to claim any New Zealand talent as our own but on the other would be unable to revert to considering them as not ours when they fail or go bad.
I don't think New Zealanders would welcome becoming Australian and I can't see it heppenning.

A merging of Australia and NZ would not be a bad economic move, although I don't think the the comparison of the European Union is a good analogy. England still has one foot in the EU, one foot on national identity and another foot in its mouth, for instance. The EU's economy has the economic might to surpass the US market-wise, but that cannot happen, because it does not really have a centrally elected body and European democracies do not like taking instructions from Geneva (I think it is Geneva), but that is another discussion.

The problem with the Aus/NZ incorporation, is that NZ would be a junior partner in the union. I can see political cartoonists already making sexual cartoons showing Howard dominating the NZ's prime minister, while one of the minister's is handing him another viagra. Also, the new constitution would have to have a proviso that Australians cannot make any sexual connotations involving sheep . Or better yet, that Australians would have to start sexually abusing sheep, just to show comradarie . Just kidding .

Either way, it makes lots of economic sense, if NZ's ego can live with taking second place to Aus.
