Hi all
Not even going to pretend I know what im talking about when it comes to pcs and the internet, but its finally time to update my internet connection to broadband or wireless for my laptop at home. I have foxtel running off the phone line, and also have a home alarm system which may or may not be hooked up to the phone line. SOmeone said I need a filter for this can anyone clarify??
Can I use wireless anywhere in my house once i have the "wireless router"?
Apart from these questions, what are the costs im looking at? Just thought Id speak to the knowledgable people on my forum before I phone internet service providers.
Thanks guys n gals.

I recently had ETech out I think they were called to install a central line splitter which are usually recommend if you have either a) foxtel digital b) monitored alarm or c) more than 3 connection points in use.
I'm sort of against the whole all in one units, in my setup which is also shared wirelessly to the neighbours I have a modem setup which goes off through to the network and finally into a access point with an antenna in the roof. To confuse people I even have another AP (access point) sitting there not connected and not secured, must drive through mongrels driving past with their notebooks mad
Costs varies depending on where you go, drop me a PM with your number and I can tell you what you can and can't do.
A bit lean of info but I'll get to it a bit more later.
If you go the ADSL path you will need filters on all your devices connected to the phone line (except the modem). The alternative is a central filter on the incoming line which is better for back to base alarms (which sounds like you have).
For ADSL in Adelaide I would recommend internode (www.on.net), have been with them for over 4 years now and have been relatively trouble free. Am on a ADSL 2+ 59.95/month with 20gig.
Best to have a look over at http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ to get an idea of the range of providers/plans.
As for the wireless router, best to get an all in one modem, router and wireless point in one. They have a fairly good range around the house, but transfer speeds between pc's suffers over the wireless link.

we've got Wireless Broadband here.
And yes you can use it anywhere in your house as long as you have the appropriate wireless card.
Don't be fooled though, its not always as good as it sounds, i've always got problems staying connected to the net in my room which is only about 20m away from the router
cost wise... same as broadband, but you'll have a higher setup fee (have to buy the wireless router and cards... will all come in a pack)
If you get broadband, you'll be able to use your home phone no worries, no filter or anything needed. Broadband simply uses another method (cable not telephone) of connecting to the net.

Our setup's alright..
Bigpond Cable (had it since 2001) on 10GB plan at 8mbit, but I don't get throttled, have downloaded up to 140GB one month out of pure boredom and to see far I could push it, nothing happened and I could probably do it right now if I chose to but I would run out of hard drive space before something happens lol.
Set it up myself, the modem (SB4200) is connected to the router (Linksys WRT54G running HyperWRT + Thibor15c firmware) that shares the internet to all of the nodes, it's got a lot of the functionality of a $300 router and it's only a $100 router which isn't too shabby at all.. wireless disabled at the moment though since everything is wired but when I get the Wii today I'll have to turn it back on and use WPA2 enterprise if it supports it, no way in hell I'm putting up a WEP network, it's as if I'd have no protection at all lol..
At the moment only two PCs are on the LAN and an XBOX running XBMC but more often than not Linux..
EDIT: Remembering how useless the guy Telstra sent was, he left our house with the Internet connection not working (software) so I had to fix the problem myself, lucky I wasn't a noob.. ahh back in the days with the launchpad software from hell
Im running a wireless network here at home, we run 3-4 computers off it and laptops... however many we want really....
Then we have wireless broadband 1GB up and 1GB down... Which uses a special modem from the suppliers of the internet which is connected to our router....
Works a dream no dramas.... all secured
our austar/foxtel comes via satelite and our alarm system is connected to the phone line which is monitored by a security company.
