what tyres were bald? if they were rears i could understand, but if you drive with bald fronts you deserve to get defected.

Driving with bald rears isn't going to effect much. Your fronts do 75% or the work. That is of course if you know how to drive, if not, i agree, tread all round.

Err, if this is the case, why is it then when race cars rears go off they lose so much time? I am sure as hell they know how to drive. Unless you want to drive around chasing your ass all day long rears are as important as fronts. Knowing how to drift isn't knowing how to drive, any f**kknuckle and his dog can drift.

What race car,or any car for that matter, comes out with treaded tyres on front and slick tyres on the rear?

i think we've nailed the fact that a car really does need all four tyres to have tread.

Hairy i hope your mate didn't then go and put his bald ones back on. I also hope he doesn't flaunt loopholes in laws for other things dangerous enough to kill innocent road users.

You seem to have misread my post. I never mentioned slicks.

i'm talking about the wear bars that only really give you half your tyre. Theres still miles of room for the water to be dispursed, and if it is going to aquaplane on tyres that are half treaded, it'll do it on ones with full tread so theres no difference.

just to clarify, i was talking 'bald' as according to motor regs, not 'slick' like dry race tyres.

Hmmm.... Here's a even better suggestion - how 'bout buying a pair of tyres - it might save not only your own arse, but mine too.

    Honestly, your a tool.

Ever compared a new tyre with one that is just on the wear bars??? Ever driven in a down pour??? There is no question that tyres just past their limit will let go way before a new set.

I just drove thru a big rain shower on my way back from Adelaide - there was a river of water pouring down the Western Fwy and I'm very glad I put new boots on the rear before the trip. A damp road - yeah maybe there isn't a huge difference but when it's pumping - don't kid yourself.

Have you honestly actually looked at where the wear bars are situated? The amount of tread your given above the wearbars is the same as under them, so in theory half of that.

I've driven with tyres under the wear bars in a downpoor, i really couldn't tell the difference between that and full tread. Sure i'm a tool, but i'm the first to admit it. And i also know how my car drives on all different levels of tread.

Tyres don't just 'let go'. If you'd seen the 18s i had on the rears for a few months, you'd understand where i'm coming from, assuming you get decent tyres. Of course retreads can't be trusted, but if you have a NEW tyre with half tread, they wont be going off any time soon.

Well your mate's a tool. The idea of roadworthiness is to protect us as well as him.

There is no fun in advice on how to shirk safety responsibilities as a road user.

To me a bald tyre has no tread. They are dangerous to us all, drive with whatever you want i just hope it is you with the toe tag and not an innocent person. You have no idea what is on the road ahead of you, water, oil, animals.Drive with your unroadworthy cars just not near me and my family.
