HELP, need computer wiz

my pc running very hot!!! cpu was at 75 degrees C. i've fitted a bigger heatsink and fan and now it's down to about 53 degrees C (@ 100% cpu usage). it's a AMD athlon 2500+. where/how much heat transfer paste do i use and where do i put it(i've used most ofthe heatpaste that came with the new fan/heatsink - put it on the center of the chip + surrounding bits as well?)

Yeah thats pretty hot... is it overclocked? The ThermoCompound should be on top of the CPU between the heatsink or fan and the top of the cpu. Make sure your running the cpu fan at full speed and if that aint working youll have to start looking at case air flow issues and probably a bigger cooling setup. Start with the little things first though. Where is your computer located?

ok, i put the paste on the purple chip in the middle and 5 silver bits above and below the chip(as per pic below). the heat sink sits on top of that. i replaced the original aluminium heatsink and small fan with a much larger copper heatsink and bigger fan. thats dropped the temp to about 54 degrees C @ 100% usage. before that it was up over 75 degrees but it was full if dust etc. cleaned that out and it dropped to about 60degrees and the bigger cooler etc to 53 degrees. aparently the AMD chips do run quiet hot and its not been over clocked as far as i know. possibly the the cpu core voltage has been raised from 1.65 volts to 1.74 volts but i'm not 100% new coolinf fan is running at 4400rpm

does your case have a rear inlet below where the psu is? I'd whack a 90mm fan there, wether you have it blowing in or out is something to trial.

no hole close the psu but there is one at the bottom with a 80mm fan on it already sucking air out plus 2 on the front ofthe casesucking air in. the case itself is actually quiet cold, just around psu that it's warm. there is aslo a duct coming from th side of the case to where the cpu cooling fan is. i think i may have to cut another hole in the side ofthe case to try and extract hot air away from the psu(with a fan). the motherboard is wired for a system cooling fan and power 1 cooling fan but these aren't fitted and i have no idea where they would go either

it came with software that allows you to monitor the hardware etc called "Gigabyte easytune4" also allos you to overclock the pc(i haven't overclocked this one) without actually having to physically change things on the motherboard or in CMOS. there is also a PC Health section in the CMOS setup that shows the cpu temps etc

pull the left side off facing from the front.... get a 6 inch desk fan and blow into the comp... should keep it cool... had to do that to one of my comps once...

An Athlon XP? Most of them get stupidly hot. Don't worry too much if it's 75 degrees C at 100% load. Over 90 is panic time.

My CPU runs at the 50-60 degree range majority of the time.... THats fairly normal, well for my usage and stuff anyway. Im running a an Antec case which uses a specfically desgined air flow system to reduce hot air in the case and therfore drop the core temps oif the specific elements. It has several segragated cooling zones. it makes a remarkable difference. I wouldn't worry to much about ti being that hot. 50 is fine as far as im concerned. If your that worried about it... get water cooling....

yeah, i'm starting to think that 50-60 degrees may be normal forthese AMD xp cpu's. i was playing in the CMOS setup last night and in the PC health section where it monitors CPU temp you can set a warning beep if it gets to hot and the lowest level it can be set to is 60degrees going up to 90 degrees. i think it's always run above 65 degrees with the standard heatsink/cooling fan, now witht he bigger setup it's staying at 58 degrees @ 100% usage which is where it's at now al the time cause i'm running this Folding@home software. i fitted an extra 80mm fan on theback of the PSU last night and i noticed that it runs afew degrees cooler with the side panel off so i may put another fan on the side panel to extract more air maybe

54 degrees at 100% is perfectly normal for AMD cpus, in fact thats actually pretty good.

At idle, you should realistically be sitting between 40-48c...

I have an AMD 3800+ X2 and quite often at 100% sustained workload it will hit 65c... A better test is to run your cpu at 100% for a few minutes, then drop it down to idle and see how quickly the temp drops, if its relatively quick then you don't have a problem, if it takes over 2 minutes then you may have issues.

My pentium 4 3.0Ghz runs at 64c at full load. Its normal don't worry too much about.

yeah, i'm happy with it now, got the bigger heatsink&fan on the cpu plus 2 extra 80mm extraction fans running. now at 55 degrees @ 100% usage and the system temps at 32 degrees. it's only about 10.30 in the morning now so it's still cool outside and no doubt it will rise a little as the air temp increases but it's under 60 degrees so all is good, maybe overclock it a little now to get some more go out of it????

I got an AMD64 2200+ 2.01ghz, Clocked to 2.75ghz She' runs at 31celcius, on intence gaming she hits 47celcius... It's all a matter of case design, air flow, restrictions, dust, & just how you set it up.

I got 30 deg on my AMD 64 3000+, just booted up. Air temp is 26.6 deg, and goes up to 47 when I play games. I have the stock cooler on the CPU as well as one 80mm fan sucking air in the front of the case and one at the back blowing it out.

The AMD 64s typically run a lot cooler than the Athlon XPs, it's just the way they are built.

yeah, i think the later 64 cpu's have a steel outercase where as the athlon xp cpu's don't, there's not much there to actually conduct the heat away from the chip. seems sweet now. i've only overclocked it a little at the mo but apparently this chip can handle a lot more?
