Gday
Currently I have a 2 PC network via a crossover cable. I get the net on my computer (PC2) whenever PC1 (the office maachine) is on. The PC1 is connected to a Motorola Surfboard modem, via a crossover cable. I unplugged the cable from the modem to the PC1, and plugged my cable (crossover) in. For some reason, I can't access the net on PC2. I could do it when the office PC was at the repair shop, so would I have to change a setting on my PC? I think it may have something to do with the MAC address? I'm on Optusnet Cable.
I want to only swap cables to access the net more often without the other computer being on![]()
But I could! When the PC was in the shop (PC1) i switched cables and changed no settings, and it worked. I think Optus only lets you have one MAC address per account. Could I change it on PC 2?
when i got my netgear router it was blur but its easy, optus dosn't support home networking, the best way is get router
hope this helps
- Plug the router cable into cable modem
- Plug cable into net card of computer 1
- Conect it to router
- Plug Comp2 Cable into net card
- Connect to router
- Install software
- Setup it up
- u Have a network
Of course the router will work, I just thought of that now. If anyone else knows how to do it will be helpful
Bull shit you need a router....
Ill assume PC1 has the net as i cant be assed reading this again...
1. Plug the modem into PC1
2. Set up the Network
3. Ensure you can see both computers on the network (run\cmd\netview)
4. Enable internet sharing on PC1 and PC2
5. Run the network setup wizard on PC2 and follow prompts
That should technically do it... i cant remember... you will need to ensure either PC1 or your modem is actually providing DHCP and DNS to PC2 or else the net wont work.
Quick lesson on MAC address... They are a radomly assigned hardware ID tag for netwrok interfaces. No too pieces of hardware on a network will have the same MAC address unless you have set that up in whcih case you are a tool.
To view you mac address - run/cmd/ipconfig/all
PM if that dont work.... you dont need a router, nor do you need a switch... unless you using AOL, which i tried sooooooooo hard to netwrok and it is impossible as the use a different net setup. Optus dont support home networking but that doesn't meanit cant be done.

Will it cut out the middle man ie the PC1 (office comp)?
You always need to be connected and switched on or it will not work.... PC1 acts like a router.... It do able but not alwasy best.

That's what I'm running at the minute, as long as the office PC is on I can get the net on my machine in my room, and I *could* get the net in my room without the office PC there (away for repairs).
You cant without it on... not possible.
There is no way for the data to pass through. Your either stuck with both computers on or non at all....

but i did i swear to god i did
if you can explain your setup in whcih you were able to accomplish theis then ill work it out but until that time... what you have now.. and what you want.... are impossible. sorry dude... must be a missing step somewhere.

go to here http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/...a&filter_id=57
look at some good routers they are cheap i have a netgear wilress router and it works great. then range is about 30-40 metres
Right.
Office PC got taken away for a few days for repair. As soon as it left, I took the crossover cable that links my computer (PC2) to the modem where the other crossover cable went into the office PC2. Went down to my PC and I had the net. Office PC removed and I did nothing to the network settings on my computer.
Hope this helps
Hrm, lets probe a little mroe first?
When your PC was away in the shop how long was it gone for?
Did you have to call optus to get anything to work for this new computer?
When you got the office PC back, did you have any problems plugging it back in, what sort of time frame was it?
I remember when i was on optus cable they had to call up and get my MAC address validated etc. Im not sure if they still do this though, they might use another system. HOWEVER, its the MAC address of the router thats registered with optus, not the PC's network card, so this shouldn't be an issue anyway.
I'm thinking maybe if the time between plugging the second computer in was short then the IP address was already assigned to the router and it couldnt update from the address pool to get the 2nd pc online .
If you tried PC1 on day 1, and PD2 on day 2, do they work? I think they should, it's just a question of timing (i think)
EDIT: after your post above (which i didnt see while typing), i have no idea lol, sorry dude
The office PC was in for about 2-3 days, and no more that 5 mins later when it was unplugged I swapped cables. We did'nt need anything from optus. Once the office PC was back, I set it up just like before.
Well it's not like Optus knew you had a pc removed and just allowed you to plug it in. It HAS to be a setting someplace, actually it has to be a setting on the 2nd computer, modem wont give a shit whats plugged into it, it's the pc that's picky
oh ok, it recognises the connection fine, ie it says it's connected, but it's only sends packets and doesn't recieve them.
and how do I do that?
You know what, lets try it this way...
Remove the cable from PC1 and plug it into PC2. Make sure it's the same cable etc, that way you remove that as a point of failure.
Check to see is windows recognizes the network connection. It'll be in the network connections tab. Create one if needed, it should be able to obtain the IP itself etc, it should just 'know' of the connection.
Then see if you can ping the router. http://192.168.100.1/ is the link i think for most motorolla modems.
Then see if you can get net access.
POrt forwarding is always done, just not across a network, i really dont get how this this is set up. I need a picture... some one draw me a picture
