Default What should I do?? (To buy or not to buy)

Ok, I'm not sure which section this would go under, but I suppose you'd talk about this in the 'pub' . If it's in the wrong section please move it, sorry for any inconvinience.

    Ok, now for the question.
My dad is going to be selling his car around march (for those who don't know, its a vy ss, check it out in the my ride section, click on the link in my sig ).

He'll be selling it for a very cheap price. Now I was just thinking... Should I sell my VT and buy it off him?

The reason I wanted to get peoples opinions is that I still have just over 2 years left on my P's ( ). I don't know if I can go 2 years without getting pulled over, and having P's on a car like that I'd get pulled over quite offten.

The law kind of says I can't drive that kind of car unless its the ONLY family car, but seeing as it won't be and I wont be using it for work, I'm kinda in a bit of a pickle.

I love this car, and in 2 years time I'd probably still be hard pressed to find one for the price my dad will be able to give it to me for.

What should I do? I really want this car, but considering the law + insurance, it won't be a smart buy

And I would have to sell my VT to get the money, seeing as I'm broke at the moment

Maybe I just need to hear someone say "No!"

    Opinions:

    But wait... There's more!!

    But that's not all!!!

short term it would make you really happy...

long term it could leave you broke (in terms of insurance) and without a licence...

tough choice..my opinion suck in it and don't do it

    mmm..!

i've been pulled over 12 or so times in 7 months.. you will get pulled over, it's a matter of when. also, i don't think/know if you'd be able to put the rego into your name, they'll know your prohibited from driving it won't they?

(that's how it is in NSW unless you have an exemption form)...

what's the penalty for driving a prohibited vehicle??? i want to know also... loss of licence? fine?

maybe try really hard for an exemption?

just take ownership and leave it in ur folks name, put the P plates up, drive it sensibly and u shouldnt have TOO much trouble

a cop isnt gunna just pull u over for that unless hes bored. but if ur doin something wrong he will hound u for that too.

R Photon, Those are the words I didn't want to hear but I suppose your just being the voice of reason haha. Insurance would probably be not too much more than it is now, wouldnt I be a higher rating after a year? I dunno. But it would still bleed my wallet dry... Even though my VT is doing a good enough job at that!

Christina, I'm not sure if its true but apparently as of 01-07-07 its three points and $322 fine. Thats what someone said in the my ride thread. I don;t think it would be a hassel getting the rego in my name... But you never know, it could be... damn!

Ripcell, thats a pretty good point... Although if they wanted to the police could tell me I cant drive it and give me a nice fine and loss of points. I have driven it past police a couple times and they didnt even look twice though. I would like to say "this is MY car" but hey, if I do end up getting it that way I can complain

    But wait... There's more!!

    But that's not all!!!

i reckon, ring up the RTA, woops, VIC roads and do some reasearch, see what they say. i'm sure there would be other people who have raved on crap to get exemptions.

I have to make my decision before the 11th of March (I think, not sure on the exact date but I think its the 11th). One year and one day after getting my P's, and One year on the day since buying my vt... How ironic

yeah weigh up the pro's and con's.
it'd be a great car to have, and this is probably not what you want to hear, but i guess it's more thinking with your heart and not your head. (hell, if we all thought with only our heads we'd be driving bloody hybrid cars or something).
But anyway, if you can't get an exemption, I wouldn't risk it. I think I remember reading somewhere in the VY section that there were some minor problems with that car? Obviously you know the condition it's in, and can get it for a good price, so that's a pro. At the end of the day, make sure you don't think all with your heart (yeah, its hard ), so you won't regret it somewhere down the line.

As it stands at the moment, it is a $105 fine for driving a high powered vehicle. With no points. As of 1/7 it will increase to $322 and attract 3 demerit points.

So yeah, you could register in your mum or dad's name and hope you don't get pulled over. I'd be more worried about insurance. I don't think you could insure it in your name either. I couldn't see an insurance company coughing up if you ever needed to make a claim. I mean legally you're not allowed to drive it.

I think it is a big big financial risk. Personally I'd never contemplate it. I say wait until you're off your P's then get one.

just say ur car is off the road getting fixed or something and u needed to get around, if its in ur perants name then they have they have to believe it, they might still right u a fine, but it can actually sound like a genuine reason, not just cos i wanted one...

Buy it, lock it in the shed until you can drive it. Get a cheap bomb to use for the time being. They're great, get one and thrash it till it stops. Then flog it to the wreckers.
Or, buy it, and let your dad use it, leave it rego'd in his name etc, and borrow his car, or other family members cars.

Or just move to WA or Tassie

Just car AND AAMI (who are just cars parent company) would have insured me as a 16yo learner, so I think they would probably be the only ones who would insure me. I wouldnt be looking at getting much change back from 3 grand though.

For me... about the $12,000 mark I think (Red book have it for about 19-22g) from what I've seen though, redbook are VERY conservative with their pricing. It has 101,4XX ks on it.
It's a "Company" car and the lease runs out in March, so either we pay out whats left and sell it for what other SS's are going for, or I get it at the pay out price. (Sorry, if I don't get it at that price, we will be selling it for what it's really worth )

If I don't end up getting it, It'll be in the 'cars for sale section' around mid march ()

My dad is getting himself a toyota aurion or ve calais.

I like the idea of getting a bomb to use for a couple years. I mean... I doubt they'll be that cheap in two years... Its hard to find a VT for that much

    GET IT! GET IT!
haha think about it, you have your p's so there going to hassle you anyway so you might aswell be in "mums" or "dads" car if they ask.....
tell the cops its your mums car, and tell your mates its yours, simple
and as for rego? wouldnt you be able to keep it in your mum/dads name? and for insurance just put you down as a part driver but drive it all the time, im put down for my old mans 4wd, his monthly payments didnt change but my excess if IIII smash it is 1500.... but only 500 if he smash's it...
and if u keep the insurance/rego in there name it will look better for you if the cops pull you over?
just a suggestion because thats what i was going to do with my dads vp when he had it(DAMN IT! THAT WAS NICE! pitty he sold it)...... anyways man thats what i would be doing but its up to you..... mmmmm vy ss *drool*

If its a company leased or salary sacrificed car, wouldn't you need to pay the residual on the vehicle (unless its a full buyout lease)?

If so, I think you'll find the the residual would be around at least 16-17k, unless your dad plans to foot the rest of the bill for you.

If you can get it for 12k, go for it I say.... Worst case, you go broke, and you'll be able to sell it for at least 19k-20k, so you still make a profit.

Why not pay it out to your dad? Then sell it, making a nice profit, buy a banger and invest the rest for next couple years til you can have a high powered car?

I've got a vh wagon that you can have in march for $200 It's not pretty but it gets me around and it's reliable, but my vl is only days away from being rego'd and the vh rego is due in late april.

    Hmmm... some good points there.
Also, the buy out price is so low because of bonuses and what not that he has put towards the car in the past. Not sure exactly how it works, but thats about the price.

If I sell my vt and buy the vy, i'll probably end up spending 1,000 maybe? thats if i can sell the vt for about 11 which im hoping i could! (maybe not though )

Hmm... If it was to happen it would stay under my dads name, as would insurance with me as a listed driver ive decided (as of all the advice).

Good idea about buying/selling/making profit. But then i would have to borrow money (if i dont sell the vt) and i dont think people like making lones to unemployed uni students

    But wait... There's more!!

You can't be listed as a driver since you legally can't drive it.

Are you sure the car is too powerful for a P plater? A lot of people think that P plater's can't legally drive a V8 because it's too powerful... but it's not about power alone. It's power to weight ratio. I have no idea what a VY SS's power:weight is, but you could have it tested I'm sure and it just might fall within the legal limits.
My mate at work was fined on the spot for driving his VT Senator on his P's but later had it withdrawn after getting his car tested and finding that it fell within the limits.
I dunno... maybe you've already considered this. But if not it may be worth looking into, and you may find that you can drive the car legally without the risk of being fined.
