    Default Advice on EPA notice....

Hey all just wondering if anyone know a way I can pass my up coming EPA test for my exhaust? The notice claims it was too loud, but that was with my old system...........the new one is louder.
Its pacemakers into twin hi flow 2.5" cats, into a twin 2.5" system with a hotdog on each pipe into a twin in-twin out rear muffler.
    Cheers

you'd be hoping the $1300 bought you a couple of flanges

then you can unbolt say.... the rear muffler and replace it for a completely blocked v6 resonator or two filled with steel wool and stuff

Its a hand built system mate, only flanges are at the cats.

remove the cat back and put on a stocker bought from a wrecker for $50 or so?

it should only be on brackets, pretty easy to swap over.

Alot of work, but saves you tampering with the actual system.

There is an aussie invention similar to the exhaust valve found in almost every new roadbike, which gradually opened at certain revs increasing backpressure at lower revs therefore theoretically torque, but opening fully at a certain point. Bonus was it could be made to open later, so when testing at certain revs it muffled sound quite well

i always ask for flanges to get put in, for reaasons such as this (and easy removal of gearboxes, or the exhaust)...

i reckon go there and ask nicely for them to put flanges in before the very back muffler man..... then get a 2 into 1 piece made up with matching flanges and a stock v6 resonator (2 1/4" in/outlet)..... you can also put plates in between the flanges with a couple of holes drilled, to further quieten and choke it.

the exhaust shop might charge you 100 bux or so for the work, but at least you'll have an epa system for next time! and a total of 5 minutes to change over

if you go with this setup, you might notice the car is horrid to drive - i.e. won't rev into the higher rpm (they only do the test to a certain rpm)....

if you've got a long way to drive for the epa test, just drive there with your standard pipes, and change them down the streeet before you go in

I've attached a drawing, because i am an artiste.

I heard of an exhaust place off Mathews ave Airport West, that will remove your exhaust put on a quiet one for the test then refits your exhaust again after the car is cleared. All up about $150.

dave the only way is to shut it up, either swap the system for a legal one or mod this one to keep it quieter, maybe some restrictor plates in the flanges? ive seen that done

To be quite honest its not that loud. As for attention that is one of the reasons im pissed at this. I have had the car for 6 months and never been pulled up, hell I drove it to Springnats (canary central) and no cops hassled me.
As for it being illegal, a legal exhaust is 90dB or less...........the only way to do that is with a stock system, so any modded exhausts are illegal.

Yeah thats the plan now mate. Un bolt the cats and after them put some metal plates with a few holes in them.

    What a bummer.

Reminds me of the time I got pulled over for an RBT less than a week after I got my SS. Went something like this.

Cop: Where are your P plates?
    Me: P plates? uumm.. I'm 30!
    Cop: License please.

He than proceeds to have a walk around the car. Looking at tyres etc etc..

About 5 minutes passed and he then comes back and says.

    Cop: Your windscreen is defectable.
    Me: Why?
    Cop: Its is severely pitted.
    Me: No it isn't
    Cop: Yes it is.

I decided to put him out of his misery and reached across, pulled out the very current roadworthy certificate and handed it to him!

Who did the wiring under your bonnet, thats quite bad..

cop: no dramas mate, take it easy, ok?

Excuse me for continuing the off topic trend..

Got pulled up the night we installed my tightened lsd by an undercover cop, he followed me and heard the diff skipping around every corner with virtually no throttle.

Cop: If I saw you doing that outside my place I'd come out and take away your car.
Mate in passenger seat: Yeah but we don't know where you live mate so we wouldn't do that.

The cop didn't know how to respond but proceeded to check the stock tyres which came with the diff and had perfect tread. My mate can't resist stirring them up, hes pretty bad haha.
