I think they finally might be taking steps in the right direction, although that passenger restriction is still going to put more drunk drivers on the road.
Doesn't look like they'll be going with the zero strike policy. At least that'll save the skins of the non-troublemaking P platers who occasionally make honest mistakes at the wrong place and the wrong time.
I would say young drivers in quiet country towns will have less probs to get a lisence than in the big cities ... I would say that the quiet country driver even after 2 yrs or more and went to the big city for the first time would have difficulty ..... let it be 1 or 4 passengers... no difference on how the same driver will drive ....
bah.....i think you stand out more in a country town. i used to get cops driving past my house after someones been doing burnouts in town....they know where you live and what you drive and keep an eye on what your doing
thats only if your a bad boy...
one thing ide like to see is how many deaths talking on a handsfree has actually caused. i would have thought a hands free to be better cos your not compelled to look at whoever you are talking to for a glance...
passenger restrictions are good and bad. i know some of my mates would just drink and drive if they had to only take 1 person in the car. but on the other hand ive seen heaps of people hooning with only 1 passenger in the car too. they are at risk as well. hard one that one
far out, give it a rest on the p platers, TARGET THE OLD AND L-OSERS PLATERS.
amen to that.
not every p-plater is a knob head.
all these new rules but they only get the good ones and not the tossers
What did the learner drivers do? Fair enough they do some silly things while driving sometimes, but after all they are learning to drive. Do you remember the first time you ever drove a car? Were you an absolutely perfect driver? Remember, we've all been L-OSER platers at some stage.![]()

why not target friggin asians round springvale and clayton, they are worse than P platers
My partner's brother plays designated driver almost every weekend for 3 mates... what would happen to that if these laws were applicable to him? I know what his mates are like and they would probably just drive anyway.
Despite that however, I think passenger restrictions should indeed apply or the first 12 months. Disagree with night curfews though.

* Sureflo 3.5 inch medium-loud cat back exhaust
i used to be designated driver most weekends too....i wont be able to do that for a while as ive got restrictions when i get my license back. night curfew is a pile of poo basically because they ahve no way of enforcing it....theres always going to be the few people that will evade the law just to stay out that much later...
But what about those that work night shifts etc? How are they meant to get to and from work under a curfew if they put that in place?

take down your P plates lol..... no dont do that cos its instant loss of license!!!.... guess your going to have to get a ride to work and back
I'd be betting the majority of people would do that though. Even if it is an instant loss of licence. But, it could be their only means of keep their job, which is sorta sad. Finding a job is hard enough.
Well, if thats what you meant by it, then believe it or not, I actually agree with you. The test to obtain your provisional licence is much too easy. Like I said in another thread, my test, was 10 mins, back to Service Tasmania, and done. I was licenced. One U-turn, and one reverse park. The rest was just driving round under his directions. Faaaar too easy.

exactally, and its not just your mates i know mine would do the same. they cant give P platers curfews. its a free country. they cant tell people to stay home cos they cant drive.
dont worry, its just the thing atm, dw the pollys will think of somthing more important to spend money on, maybe the water problem? thats more important than P platers atm
my P test was at 130 on a friday, the guy was talking to my instructor, he said "last one for the day" the tester went "yup, soon as i do this im going home"
i wasnt even in the car for 7 minutes, outta vicroads, round the block basically and back in, half the time was actually stationary at lights. what a joke
where i live people do it, theres just not enough police to monitor everyone at the same time.....put it this way if a cop pulls someone over the would spend an average of 5 minutes checking their license, breath testing and checking the car over.....you've got a good change of not being caught but i wouldn't push my luck
hah how silly
instead of 5 passangers per car, there will be 2 passangers per car....
so say there are 2,000 first year p platers on the road at any given stage....
what could have fit into 400 cars, will now be 1,000 cars.... how much more change of a p plater having an accident in one night is there now as oppsed to before?
(simplifying greatly of course, presuing a first year p plater carries around a car full of people similar age, who are also first year p platers) - though this is not always the case, it's very common with kids who just get their license.
also, how many kids are going to go "ace, let's race! we don't have back passangers to weigh us down!"
once again, a ****ty bandaid fix to a much bigger and more complex problem.
ive never thought of it that way lukei think you need to get that thru to one of the polesmokers in parliament aye lol
i know if you do your ticket for speeding (not sure about drinkies) you can apply for special conditions. ie you and the police sit down and discuss the designated route and time you will be taking to and from your primary place of employment. from memory you have to contact them if you are going to cover overtime etc. You are not allowed to drive out of discussed times and they wont always grant you this 'freedom' if they deem there to be another alternative.
I would assume something similar would be in place if a curfew was to come into effect.
*This info is something i heard a long time ago so feel free to correct me if you know if this system still happens anywhere....
If this crap is put in place there need to be some serious exemptions not all p platers are young hoons, Im a p plater im not young, I'm 28, I don't hoon I have a family, suggesting that I am restricted to how many passengers I carry is rediculous and irresponsible, what do I do leave one of my kids at home alone should I need to go out. Another step down the wrong path imo.
edit: just check rta site, this only applys to p1 drivers 25 and younger and you are allowed to carry family members so yay 4 me lol still think its crap idea though!
In vic, your punishment beofre losing your licence was to have a P on it, it meant only 1 passenger at any time. No idea what happened to that.
The only way to fix hooning is to have ALL DRIVERS hooked up to GPS, this will stop all idiots completley.
Oh also, i think Australia need to take the route of europe. If you are caught drink driving, culpable driving charges. If you kill someone while drink driving, murder charges.

I'm a little confussed as to the new P plate laws. Maybe because I havent read anything about them. Seeing as I still have a couple more years on P's I really should get around to itbut from this thread I gather there are passanger restrictions?
I'm always designated driver and always have a full car, sometimes have to make two trips because I don't want my friends driving drunk or getting in a taxi at 3am. Soooo with these restrictions... I'm meant to leave my friends to fend for themselves? Also, what Julie said, what about those who have a family and are on P's? All these restrictions are pointless, rather than "saving lives" all theyre doing is making life harded, and making money. Same old thing![]()
But wait... There's more!!
But that's not all!!!
