Bendigo police have charged a 51-year-old with ramming four police cars in a wild chase which began with a test drive and ended with officers shooting at the alleged perpetrator.
Police say they pulled a car over on the Calder Highway near Taradale, 100km north of Melbourne, about 8pm yesterday.
The Holden Monaro had allegedy been taken from a used-car dealership during a test drive.
As officers approached the car, they say the driver reversed into their vehicle before speeding off.
Police reinforcements from Malmsbury and Kyneton gave chase.
Police allege that when they eventually caught the car several minutes later, the driver tried to run down two officers. Fearing for their life, the officers fired at the car, missing the driver but hitting the car.
“The vehicle was driven directly at two police officers who, in fear for their lives, discharged their firearms in an attempt to stop the vehicle,” Victoria police superintendent Peter Bull said.
The chase allegedly continued, eventually ending with the Monaro pinned against a wall.
John Phillip Deery, 51, appeared in Bendigo Magistrates Court today charged with 20 offences. He was remanded in custody without entering a plea.
