Why do people hoon/ race on public roads? Like probabably all of us I have been guilty of putting my foot down a litle hard from time to time but I save all my wreckless driving agression for the drag strip.
I see a lot of people driving like maniacs on public roads and hear of a lot of street racing. On this note I also hear a lot of people complaining about the police bugging them.
My point is, if people want to hoon so much, go to a drag meet or something. I race at gippsland dragway and yesterday I went and had a look at the warrnambool dragway as well. As usual there was a collection of nice cars and people having a ball but all the hoons that try racing people at every set of lights were not there.
Do people not realsise that it is complety legal to race at a strip. It is cheaper than getting a fine or killing someone by driving like an idiot in public and you can see how good your car competes against others in the right environment, even if your car is a stock astra. Drag strips like warrnambool and the gippsland dragway are only 1/8 miles so its not much different than racing you mates up the road a bit (but legal and a lot more fun)
It is simple.
It is because they are idiots. There is no other reason.
These people are immature and DO NOT deserve a licence. I suppose lack of discipline from parents also contributes. the fact police cannot do much to these people except charge them.
With everything that has been happening lately, police really need a ZERO TOLERANCE approach on youth of today.

"the youth of today" minux? I disagree... zero tolerance for ALL wreckless drivers! And not some stupid pissy loss of license thing either... their cars should be impounded!
I'm not talking minor offenses like straying a couple of k's over the limit, the current demerit system should remain in place, but with fewer points. Cars should be confiscated for anything over 10 k's over the limit, DUI, burnouts, wreckless driving, etc. Almost any potential government proposing this sort of toughening up of the laws would be guaranteed my vote!

i wouldnt say lack of discipline from parents is a big factor in this, id say there a alot more reasons like, young people when they get there car feel invincible (goes for older people too), peer pressure, not giving a shit about other peoples lives or safety, & like minux has the said, the main reason is that people are total idiots.

negative... there is always a reason, and there is almost never an excuse.
Reason: Young and naive
Reason: Friends egging you on
Reason: late for work
None of those are valid, but they are all reasons. A possible excuse might be "friend in back seat with bullet wound to chest" but even that is NOT valid because...

Thats the point im trying to put across.
If you want to hoon, take it to the strip. calder runs regular meets or if you dont think that your car is up to a quarter mile take it to an 1/8. Hooning is fun in the right place. Id rather a tropy for trying rather than a fine.
maybe people do it for the thrill at the time? thats why im assuming people do it........ and as people doing it because of discipline from there parents? i dont think that is the reason, i have seem some people who where disciplined very well but they didnt have alot of freedom, and as soon as they got there p's BANG! time for stupid shit.... alot of people think like that.... so i dont think it can be blamed on the parents in all cases but in some it can![]()
Discipline doesnt work unless applied correctly... My parents taught me to have respect for the lethal weapon I was in control of, and that was drilled into me from the start. They also set good examples. I think part of the problem is that often the parents have a "do as I say, not as I do" mentality, which DOES NOT work.
Also R.E. why don't they go to the strip?
I think thats because if they went to the strip they'd be shown up as the shit drivers they are, whereas on the roads they think they are king s#$% because of all the other road users whizzing past.

They are also the kind of people who if they do lose their licence, continue to drive anyway.
Recently where I live, a guy was pulled over driving while disqualified, he was a repeat offender who was not supposed to be driving till 2073!!
Gaol time is the only thing I can see working for someone like that.
i think it should be zero tollerence for hooning, and wreckless behaivior etc. petty shit like minor speeding. aka under 10 over should be as is...
that will get the message across fairly. because its not worth as the nsw gov want, its not worth losing your licence for 3 months for being 4ks over. for dangerous behaivior it is...
people hoon because thats their fun, not cos of bad parenting i agree. they hoon for the same reason people play football, why i race karts, why almost everyone here does aftermarket work to their cars. because thats their fun... thats what they enjoy.
i dont think theres any other reason
Mate I would have to agree with ya there.
Personally I do hoon a bit, but not heaps. If I drag I make sure the road in front is clear from any obstacles like other cars and people, and I don't go heaps fast or anythin. I do burnouts in areas which people are not likely to be, if I go there and people are there then I leave, simple as that. But I do occasionaly let the inside wheel go free around a corner here and there, but nothing to extreme.
It's wat I like to do, and many others like to do it as well.
BTW, where I live we don't have a drag strip, nearest one I wouldn't have a clue.
There will always be hoons on the road, they just can't 'stop' being hoons. It's like telling every smoker to give up cigarettes.....iit aint gonna happen.

You are the exact person we do not need on the roads, just because a road is clear when you start does not mean it will continue to be clear.
parenting etc can be to blame, by not instilling values on the road while learning to drive, by not coming down on their kids while they do circle work int he street etc.
i just hope police get the power to remove a car and licence from idiot drivers who race on the roads and generally act liek tools.

Yeh, im not sticking up for hoon's, they indanger innocent life's everyday on the road and need to mature up. I was just stating something.
To right, I wash washing my car at the local car wash yesterday and was nearly hit by two Hoons who thought it would be cool to spin there wet wheels coming out of the car wash bay.
VH Pirie, I am familiar with Pt. Pirie as i go there quite regularly and you are right there is not drag strip there and the closest strip would probably be Whyalla, I do believe that burnout competitions are held regularly in Pt Pirie, at a the dirt circuit track. So there is absolutely no excuse for doing them on the street whether it be deserted or not. As for drag racing, Whyalla is 1 1/2 hours away, is 3 hours less driving worth your life or the life's of others, I think not.
I think that as part of the punishment for hoon driving these people should have to go scrape the body's of the road from accidents caused by hoon driving instead of the volunteers, and then we will see if they do it again.
i drive my car hard, i go through lots of tyres, yet i have never crashed or had any fines or ever been pulled over, i cant say the same for the rest of my freinds who wouldnt be considered "hoons". go figure
