Hey guys, some of you will know me... some of you wont..
for those of you that dont, Hi my names Gordon im 19, and used to study computer systems engineering...
i studied last year full time, then got offered a job with Shell head office in camberwell paying more than most fully quallified people. (clearing like 800-900 a week after tax)
the plan was to work for 8 months fulltime, however at the end of 3 i just realised it was a mistake, and enrolled fulltime back at study,
oh well it paid for my entire turbo setup and tafe fee's, rego and everything i need to make me happy
anyone ever had this before?? it feels like the right decision and i dont regret it at all.., i woke up thismorning and knew what i had to do... my mate from tafe said ill miss you that thats been bouncing round in my head all week......
Atleast you did what you want and what will make you happy, it's great to see. You got what you needed and found it wasn't for you.
Mate, as long as your happy with it, thats all that matters
Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast
money should never be high on your priorities. A good relaxed work environment is key to staying happy, and money is not. We always try and live outside our means no matter how much money we make, so its far better to be happy in your job... since you spend more time there than at home!
* Phreddy's Blaupunkt Aux input and line out mod
* 18x8 inch Equus Kalibur Wheels with Maxxis MAV-1 235/40R18
* Sureflo 3.5 inch medium-loud cat back exhaust
Exactly. It's better to work a job you love and earn enough, then to work a job you hate and roll in the money, becaose money won't buy you happiness.
You work to live, not live to work

too right man, i figured ill knock my study outta the way and then get my self a job doing something i enjoy (in IT) , anyway im a 19year old with a turbo'd v6 %100 paid for :P quite a achivement in its self for a student :P
anyway im on the hunt for a part time job, any suggestions??? im good friends with the mananger and owner of the pizza shop i used to work for so i can walk straight back into a job , but i wanna move on... (its a last resort)
my friends mothers boyfriend owns a few wreckers in vic called pick a part, they'res a weekend position going, seeing if thats still availiable
if not im thinking of casual web design/IT administration as through box hill they're are heaps of jobs availiable
has anyone worked any part time jobs they enjoyed/ would reccomend... i havnt been un employed in 5 years even for a week... not gonna start now![]()
the student life is too good dude!!
huge holidays, little time spent at uni etc..
i work part time and study full and that keeps me busy enough but no way i could deal with a full time job yet...
i'll just wait until i get my degree and worry about it then..
as long as you have no regrets and feel happy about it then you did the right thing.

yeah i know, you realise how good it really is, fridays off, go out get sloshed on thursday night, friday night, saturday night then recover sunday... ohhhh i miss thursday nights
ok anyone suggest any jobs?? so far ive worked for
Hungry jacks when i was 14
safeway when i was 15-18
a internet caffe doin tech support when i was 16 for a few months
a pizza shop when i was 18-19
shell when i was 19
i have too many quallifications &certs to mention right now
ha ha good old safeway when i used to live in Melbourne i worked at the kew one down at the kew junction ha ha..
i work at Telstra now and its pretty cool. Its just in the Telstra Shop in a mall so its sales but i like the work and the pay is pretty sweet.
EDIT: to answer your question if your good at selling then get into sales, pay is good (bonuses, commission etc.) and it does look quite good on a students resume who has just graduated..

hehe yeah i know kew, how long ago, my mate works there, i worked for croydon safeway, right up untill they shoved me into the meat room after complaining about the registers not catering for people over 6ft tall, then hurt my back in meat room, was off work for 7 months, they jibbed me of any weekly compensation and was forced to go back to the work that injured me or quit... so i quit..... they still owe me $3500 or something to date... which i am entitled to just they wont pay... not worth chasing up
umm im ok at sales, but im too honost... i like to tell people whats in their best intrest, not in the best intrest for profits
i worked at safeway kew from like jan 2003 to nov 2004...
sales is about being honest...if you lie it definitely comes back to bite you in the ass...its essentially about finding what the customer wants and finding products that highlight this

I work for graphics design and artwork for a local newspaper. Pay is alrite. If you like graphics design or page layout I mite be able to get you a position but that depends on whether it is avail or not. Its in Dandenong so it quite far from where you live.
I work at Pizza HUt lol, have been for over 2 years. Wouldnt recommend it. well, no the kitchenhand part atleast, but the drivers have it pretty cruisey. Paid by the hour and per delivery. Meh, go for customer service job. My mate is 19, works at the trade desk at Reece plumbing, and rakes in $1400 a fortnight. Plus the manager puts on a piss up every friday![]()

As long as you're sure it's what you want then sounds good, you have dedication which means finding new work shouldn't be too hard, but make sure this isn't something you're going to regret.. have no regrets in life and always keep moving forward!![]()
I quit my job to move into the country with my children. So I know how ya feel it is good to do what you know is right.
Hey at least it paid for your turbo, rego, tafe, etc. Now you're not stuck in a job you don't like but you've had it long enough to have some fun!
But wait... There's more!!
But that's not all!!!

I disagree, sometimes working at certain companies will help your career no end. It helped me to a point where i went from my last job on 60k to this one over 80k. I hated the place however the experience i got was amazing.
Shell is aperfect stepping stone to a worldwide career which is what i am aiming for within the next 2 years.
Personally if it were me, i would of worked and studied. It is hard work, but trust me it pays off.
But its your choice of course![]()

First piece of advice I have for you, is to keep in contact with people you got on well with at Shell, especially if they're management. It may serve you well when it comes to finding a job when you finish your study, even if its not with Shell, it may be with another company that they're now at or someone they know. NETWORKING!!! Works wonders... I wish I had been more pro-active in finidng a job before I finished my course at the end of last year.
AttaBoy, know anyone that works at Leader Newspaper Group in Blackburn? I'd be interested in a Design and Artwork position there doing layouts and such if there was one available. Dandenong is a bit far out of my reach, bit of a last resort really.
Andy
Back in the hope things have settled down...
yeah i have done that, i sat down and talked to them, shell is a awesome employer, they are able to offer me a casual position doing exactly what i am at the moment, 1 day a week (my day off) possibly a half day aswell gotta check my time table... this means i can stay with shell and still study and have all weekend off... and have nights to study as id have to work 20 hours at some crappy job to earn as much as i do in 8 hours of work for shell...
this has worked out beatifully...i can expect to get paid $200-300 a week but thats insane while studying... enough for petroli used to work delivering pizza's and working in the shop... id earn $150 +50 for petrol a week, and spend $100 on petrol per week, then $50 a week on parking and lunches,
then have $50 a week left to either go out or spend on my car... (yes i modified my car on $50-100 a week for the last year....!!)
i can afford to get the turbo setup working good nowive got $1500 saved for rego, tafe and books... i mean ive got no bills to pay for over a year now.. a fully owned turbo car, and a good job while still studying... i think im doing good for my self at the moment
going back to studying is the best decision ive made in a long time i think..!!!!!
also ive been told when i finish my course (computer systems engineering) they're might be a IT position waiting at shell... i cant express how much of a good employer they've been![]()
I work, three nights a week earning about 60 a night + tips.i work at pizza hut and am paid by delivery, not per hour. i have a **** deal there
When I have holidays usually I boost it to 4/5 days a week
Plus, I earn some money from my mum's company because i work as a courier for her one day a week.
I go to uni, full time and have a few bills but I manage to save a hundred or two a week which goes a LONG way when you're only 19.

yeha, when your not on much you make it go a long way, when you earn lots you manange to eat it up quickly
