Hey everyone,
just had an info session for work on windows vista tonight.
Wow, what a waste of money. starting at something like $400 for home premium, all you basically get is windows xp with some visual bling and some extra features aimed at people who are completely computer illiterate. Maybe there will be some better features in the $850 ultimate edition? Not to mention microsoft pimping their new firewall anti spam anti phising program which instead of being bundled with vista is an extra $100 on top of it. Good on microsoft, way to have a monopoly on the world.![]()
yeah i read a pretty scathing write-up titled "windows vista: all right or just a p!ssweak OS X"
seems they're basically stolen a bunch of features (windows sidebar/ mac dock) and done them poorly.
shame too, as a diehard PC man, i was hoping this might be decent.
fk vista off xp's staying for awhile or untill i build my quad core 4gb system in like 3 years lol
Running it here, and have been using it on and off since the Longhorn Alpha's since 2004 I think, I like it and think it's a big step up from Server 2003 (I refuse to touch XP with a 10 foot pole)

But your avatar, the lower mouse has the word Microsoft on itThough don't think anyone would touch that mouse afterwards lol
ubuntu is looking awfully good to me right now
kubuntu ftw
I won't be installing Vista, as juzza informed me its not compatible with turbolister.
I think I'll be sticking with XP pro for a while...
Meh!~
popular thread ftw
question for all computer minded's:
im currently running xp on a sata drive and ubuntu on an ide. When i was writing my witty post earlier my computer froze. I reset it and it said "error cannot read master hdd 4". I then tried to boot xp on my sata and it said 'file not found', and when i tried to access my sata partions on ubuntu it came up with nothing there.
I then switched the computer off and everything started as normal, and im now running active smart which is telling me my hdd's are normal.
This is leading me to believe its my motherboard.. i kinda skimped on it when i bought my new pc and its had nothing but problems... not multitasking well, video card siezing up, sound going distorted etc... this hdd problem just adds to a growing list. So I think it's either my motherboard, or every other part of the computer at the same time... What do all you computer junkies who are reading this thread think?
Do you knowhow hot your bridges are?? you may just be over heating either north or south depending on the issue....
aZk.... what i mean is do you have a like a pc probe style utility whihc will indicate temps... itprob just a **** MB
aZk.
neg... point me in the right direction!
cheers

only happened as of late, and only the second time. First time about a week ago, i left it on the desktop and when i had come back it had rebooted and was telling me about hdd errors. Secondly, about 20 mins ago when i was writing in this thread, it just siezed up and did the same thing when i reset it. I might backup the stuff on my hdd after just in case.
Well ill be going to vista because i have a new system coming in the next few weeks, i figure i might as well get an OEM version of vista now rather than a retail one later (a ****load cheaper for the OEM)
Ill get it and see how it goes, if it sucks ill stick XP back on and wait till vista gets a service pack or something and see where im at. I rather buy it now cheaply when i have the chance that but it later (or stuff around with a pirated version like i did for xp for a while)
i would agree with juzza about xp, i have that and 98 and xp is just to suseptable to spyware/adware where 98 doesn't have any prob with that.
We got rep back, yaaay!
The OS is only as good as the user, me personally I'm using XP on a number of machines and I can think of 1 instance where I've had to format a machine because of virus or spyware infection.
Ubuntu, Gentoo, Suse, they are all open sameI'm using Ubuntu Server as a server obviously and Suse as a desktop when windows isn't running. It's not all what's it's cracked up to me, sure if your the average joe blow using it for web browsing, school projects your going to be fine but if your like need and need certainly functionality which at this stage linux doesn't have your kind of stuck.
I will say though it is getting better and better all the time to back when I first dabbled with it back around the RedHat 6.2 days.
Anyways back on track, Vista isn't too badly priced, well in comparison to the pricing I've heard recently anyway.
Home Basic
Windows Vista CD 32bit $138.60
Windows Vista DVD 32bit $134.20
Windows Vista DVD 64bit $135.30
Home Premium
Windows Vista DVD 32bit $169.40
Windows Vista DVD 64bit $170.50
Business
Windows Vista CD 32bit $217.80
Windows Vista DVD 32bit $213.40
Windows Vista DVD 64bit $215.60
Ultimate
Windows Vista DVD 32bit $289.30
Windows Vista DVD 64bit $289.30
No I'm not going to buy it for anyone at that pricebut it gives you an indication of how much you should be paying.
But that is OEM prices Darren, retail prices will be double that![]()
So use it as an opportunity to upgrade and buy the OEM version... Buying a $400 worth of hardware will allow you to buy an OEM version.
As for Linux, its so overrated, I used to use it all the time when I was at uni, but for the work I do now, development in alot of .NET applications for our clients, among other languages, its just a major hassle to use linux. If you set up your windows machine correctly, setup your network properly and keep your system up to date, you have no problems.
Linux is fine if you can live with using the bare minimum, ie internet browsing with poor plugins and java support, email, IM clones etc etc.
