Hey, i work for a large petrol company's head office, anyone have any questions/queries i might beable to help with?? my speciality is pricing
how is it that petrol people manage to raise the price of pettys by up to 8 - 10 cents a litre on a thursday and its back down again on a monday? is it as blatant a con as it looks or what, coz to me upping price so considerably on a thursday just tells me that they want to make more money before the weekend...

My guess is they do this to make money when people get paid. It goes up wednesday afternoon and goes down friday and most people get paid Wednesday or Thursday right?
Paradox thanks for starting this. It feels like we are talking to a cigarette company insider.
I got a question. Is 98 ron fuel really 98 Ron or a con?
<davy> remember when braveheart came out and everyone said you can't have mel gibson playing a scottish guy cuz it wont be realistic?
<davy> well look at him now

petrols cheapest on tuesday/wednesday morning as far as i know, and i always though that was because most people dont get paid till wed night/thursday. But the basis of that pricing would be that they dont sell as much on monday/tues/wed etc, coz a lot of people go spending when they get payed..ie. thursday. It ties in with cheap movies and pizza on tuesday etc. Thats what i reckon anyway
VG ute, 5.0lt, 5spd, twin exhaust, cam etc.
VQ stato, 5.0lt, auto, pretty stock
TT Soarer, 400rwhp, 5spd, lots of mods.
When are you guys going to stop ripping us off.

why have prices of everything gone up because of fuel prices yet trucks run on diesel and the prices for diesel have stayed the same?
What I was amazed at while in NZ was that their petrol prices are the same at every single servo (unless you go outside of town and they are a bit higher). They also have no weekly discounting cycle and when the oil price drops, the cpl drops as well. Interestingly, not a big rollout of LPG over there and the price was considerably higher, about $NZ0.92/l.
Supply and demand my friend, there's more demand for fuel over the period between thursday and saturday than the rest of the week. Servo's are supplied with fuel on a scheduled basis, in relatively quiet areas like where I live, it's once a week. If ya have a think about it, it makes sense that when you have a limited supply, when the demand rises ie. on public service payday, public holidays etc. the price will rise. Your final point is also correct, they want to make as much money as they can, they are a business and that's pretty much what their goal in life is.

I'm curious as to why fuel is 20 or so cents more in the countryIt doesn't make me at all happy
Like 5/10 cents I could understand maybe... but on average 20 and as high as 30 cents difference... what's the deal?

y is it when petrol prices go up by a few dollars a barrel they rise prices the within a few day but when it drops like it has now u have to wait months 4 it to drop.. and even then they do they dont drop it to wat it should b..
when are you gonna bring fuel back down to .80c then, or even 60c![]()

so what do you do then (i know pricing) but like what, do you look at all the figures and say fuel will cost this much today or whats the go, give us a brief run down..i got no idea what a pricer does before they put the little sticker on the product and i wanna know![]()
cheers
It's higher in the country for two reasons.I'm curious as to why fuel is 20 or so cents more in the country It doesn't make me at all happy Like 5/10 cents I could understand maybe... but on average 20 and as high as 30 cents difference... what's the deal?
1, They know there are limited servo's in the county so competition isn't as great.
2. The tankers have to travel further, (costing more) so therefore they have to raise the price to match costs.

bout time someone started this thread to help people understand, dont go stabbin me or anything lol
well ok alot of questions, 1st, the cost of making petrol HAS dropped to around 55c-65c per litre from 92RON, add tax ($0.3814 excise + %10 gst)
then ontop of that add freight, and profit, then reseller profit(the petrol station profit)
Yes 98RON is 98 octane, its pretty much a more refined fuel with a few little goodies
now out in regional area's the petrol can be up to 20c per litre more expensive because of the freight to get it there from say the newport/gelong terminals (or the closest terminal gate)
trust me when i say this, if petrol could be any cheap on behalf of the petrol companies, it would be, only about 6-7c per litre is actually profit
it is true, world oil prices have dropped therefore the TGP price (terminal gate price, ie cost to make fuel) has dropped and thats why we are seeing cheaper fuel prices, now with the ACCC getting involved petrol prices are being forced to stay constant,
you have a few main things that make up petrol prices
TGP (cost to make fuel)
Profit (to help the company grow)
Freight (cost to get the fuel to where you are)
Tax (excise + gst - state subsiedy)
Reseller Profit (the retail profit, pays staff wages and keeps the site open)
now tax is one of the BIGGEST area's petrol prices could be slashed...
now ill let u in on a little secret, they're arnt that many fuel refinaries in australia, ever wonder where all the fuel comes from?? compaies have deals, for instance i believe shell is really BP fuel in WA as they dont have a refinary there...
also the diffrence between fuel quallities is all in the storage site, if a site is poorly maintained then the fuel can get contaminated and not be as good, always fill up at a servo with shinny new pumps... this means the tanks are probbly in good condition...
hope that clears some things up for people
lol jonny dosnt control that tax, thats the shadow minister i think or those dudes at the treasurey (i imagine it a hobbits adobe with lots of pots of gold)
excise was introduced like 40 years ago to help with something, was only ever ment to be temporary..
just like the NO TOLLS on the new eastlink aye bracksy
what gets me is the fact that petrol prices go up real quick but are very slow coming down

Hey,
Yeah I reckon the fuel prices are bloody rigged people...
The Fuel company charging consumers 10c more then what really needs to be.
It is somewhat kind of routed really, I guess i wouldnt be the only one who thinks this way at all.
Forgive me lord for i have sinned, I hit 4th gear jump5th gear pinned:b:
Of course it is rigged. But it is way bigger than Australia. OPEC pull all the strings. If supply outweighs demand then prices will drop. So opec cut production to such a level whereas supply only barely meets demand. Then prices rise again. That's how they influence the prices.
There is a down side to low petrol prices though because the big oil companies will be less motivated to spend $$$ on exploration drilling. No offence PaRaDoX616, but I think most of what you have to say on the subject is company propaganda.
How many litres of fuel on average does Australia use per day?![]()
