Was driving home from washing my car about half an hour ago and was heading up Burwood highway into Upwey. If you're from Melbourne you'll know where I'm talking about. Its just as you go past the turn-off for the Mount Dandy tourist road.
Anyway as I'm coming up the hill in the right hand lane, there was a high visibility patrol car sitting in the left hand lane facing down the hill. He had something in his hand but it didn't look like your run of the mill radar gun. Looked more like a digital camera. So as soon as I see him I hit the skids. (Was doing 75 in a 70 zone.)![]()
As I almost get up to him he flashes his high beams. Now I'm thinking "great I've just been pinged." So I slow down as I pass him and look over. Seems he has no interest in me and is still occupied by whatever it is he was holding. So as I'm driving further up the road I'm watching in my rear view mirror just waiting for him to chuck a U-turn and come after me but he doesn't!![]()
So what I'm wondering is should I expect an unpleasant surprise in the mail?
5 ks over? i doubt he'd even bother. high beam flash was probably just a warning. pretty sure for any police vehicle, they gotta pull you over to issue the fine, but could be wrong. maybe this should be moved into the ask a policeman thread
Sounds just like a warning to me.
dw mate ill say the same as the other 2, looks like just a warning. because if he wanted to take money out of your pocket he would of came running for it![]()
Yeah this happened to me over the xmas break on my way to Lakes Entrance too. Was doing 110 on the Princes Fwy, in a 100 zone, when all of a sudden around a corner I see the car sitting behind the bushes with the radar gun. Naturally I slowed down straight away, but he gave me a flash of the high beams and that was it. No chase. It was just a warning.
I'm pretty sure they need photographic evidence to be able to book you, and those radar guns don't take photographs. Copper's also need to fill out paper work for every little offense they charge people with, so if you're only doing a little bit over the limit chances are they won't bother booking you because of the paperwork involved.
yeh think he was just warning ya...legally ur allowed to be 5k's over due to speedo differences...
cheers

You can be busted for doing less than 5ks over in Victoria at least, but a high beam flsh is police code for I could have busted you if I wanted, slow down
No your'e not. it used to be 10%, but you can get a speeding fine for being over between 5-15 kph. 10% of 60 kays is 6 kays over. That makes it 66 in a 60 zone, just ripe for a speeding fine.
I got one for 73 in a 70 zone, (by camera-1st fine in 15 years.) so don't go believing that 10% crap.
Forgive me if I don't reply to a query straight away. The E-mail notification function only works 50% of the time for me.
Give me your IP and I'll ping you (nerd joke)
Dont they send them out in the mail in Vic?
lol you giant geek Juzza
Sounds to me like the flash of the high beams was a warning. I wouldn't worry.
btw I'm not moving this to the ask the copper thread because theres a hundred similar questions in there already and this thread already has heaps of replies.
Question answered in any case so I'm administering the chloroform to this thread so it goes quietly*lock*
