what operating system is it running? in windows xp there is a system restore tool in it. you can choose a restore point at any time. pretty sure it is in system tools somewhere.

mmmm im not big on system restore :S
What kind of lappy is it? because if you wanted to do a top to bottom wipe you could run the recovery though it, be sure to back everything up that you want to keep

If its a Dell/ Acer/ etc you should be able to put a system restore disc in and wipe it all the way back to factory settings. I think you can even do that without putting in the disc, just have to get into options somewhere.
I did it to mine not long back - bad move though it left me missing drivers that I used to have, programs didn't work anymore etc. But I think I've sorted it now.
yeah ive backed up all i want
its a HP pavilion dv 1000
& running windows XP

If anything it'd be in the Dell options menu, if you have a cd that came with it, rather then the Windows options.
HP's should have a Windows restore and a Applications + driver s restore disks, that'll be your reload

system restore only goes back so far.
if you bought your pc from a shop it should have come with the disks for windows and possibly the OEM softeware. it may be in your manafactures menu in the start menu. if you have the disks this is better yet
the best way to do it if you have the disks for windows and the OEM software is to
format.
reinstall windows.
activate windows.
install oem softare
if you dont however its not that easy
you may just need to
uninstall all your programs.
delete your documents (back them up ofcourse)
delete any other files/folders you have lieing around on ur pc
then you may want to remove the password
I know with my toshiba the restore/reformat function is stored on a partition on the hard drive. Just a matter of hitting a certain key in the boot sequence and it will give me the option of wiping it and starting again. I can also burn the restore image to a dvd to run that way as well.
na cant find the cds bugger hey bloddy computers the sh1t me

Different PC manufacturer does it with slightly different approaches, but with XP you can restore your system to factory defaults, in some cases. If you:
-Go to the Start Menu
-Then to "Help and Support"
- Do a search on "Restore" or "System Restore" it should give you detailed steps.
You can probably start in safe mode,(I think it is F8 on many systems while booting up), and there may be an option there to restore your computer to factory settings.
Back up your hard drive if you want anything on it, or it may get lost.
Good luck!
