a mate put me on to this, at first i thought it was a photoshop
some guy's put an 18 litre US tank motor from world war 2 into a 1970 ford mustang.
the forum it's from (with pics):"All aluminum 1100 cubic inch V8 used in WWII Sherman Tanks. These were gas burners rated at 500 HP and 1050 Ft. Lbs. of torque for military service"

The fuel Economy would be scary.

PFFFFFFFFFFFT he aint got nothing on my 3.8 *rolls eyes* haha, but would be crazy on economy like trei said..... ooooo well his choice, something different![]()
500HP ?? Something like that I was expecting it to be 10 bazzillion HP... Spose it's from a WW2 tank though...
But wait... There's more!!
But that's not all!!!

Ah whats the point? Other than bizzar looks and to show you can do it... But 500HP from 16 liters is crap! A BMW engine can get that power from an engine 1/4 of the size, and with all that extra weight I cant imagine it would go that fast...

yeah...
500hp = 375kw
when HSV gets their hands on the new 7.0liter chev that they use in the corvette motor in the states currently, they will have 373 kw

yeah 500 from an 18litre is pretty crap compared to these days.... you can get 500 from a bmw/benz... but imagine that back then? most cars where lucky to have 50kw..... this has like 370 something? still not worth it but... obviously he wanted to go unique but he should of put 10 turbo's on a big block or something? would of cost the same and would of been known for it to
haha
Good luck to the guy for trying to insure it
500hp out of anything in those days was pretty big power. You guys bag this figure without knowing a few vitals about the engine. Stroke, bore, valve sizes, cam timing etc.....dont forget what sort of octane it would have made that power on, too.....
"Ford GAA United States Water V-8 18 450 hp @ 2600 rpm"
Look at the rpm figure.
This car gonna need bigger, better brakes. How heavy this thing must be!!!!????
maybe only 500hp but look at the torque 1050?? i think it was! thats some big torque, remember this engine used to push a bloody tank along, i'd like to see your bmw engines with 500hp do that! HP and Kw arn't everything![]()
now it's in a mustang which looks like it wouldn't weigh anymore then 1300kg i think it would go bloody hard.![]()
should have put the full quote inThese were gas burners rated at 500 HP and 1050 Ft. Lbs. of torque for military service, but are capable of much much more using mostly stock parts. They feature a 60 degree vee, 5.4 bore x 6.0 stroke, 180 degree factory billet cranks, pent roof combustion chambers, shaft driven DOHC's, 4 valves per cylinder, and dual mags.
And thus, it should go ok, especially if he charges it....These were gas burners rated at 500 HP and 1050 Ft. Im not bagging it, 500hp is loads, but look at the size of that engine. The Ford GTX1 gets 700HP, and the Bugatti Veyron gets 1001HP out of much smaller and lighter engines. And yes I know 500HP was good BACK THEN, but its not anymore, especially seeing that car is going to have to lug the weight of that engine around.
I mean even Jay Leno's "Tank Car" makes 900HP, thats a bit better (it has a tank engine as well)![]()

"All aluminum 1100 cubic inch V8" being all aluminum i think it wouldn't weigh to much....what do you think?
Thats still a lot of aluminum. It'd still be fairly hefty.
A computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any other invention in human history, with the possible exception of handguns and tequila.
is it me or wouldnt that be 27.5ltrs not 18ltrs
1100inch cubic x 2.5 (2.5cm in a inch) = 2750cubic cm or 27.5ltrs
also on another note jays is now twin turboing the car,
heres some little intresting info on it
http://www.popularmechanics.com/blog...s/3446196.htmlThe fuel rails alone are the size of V8 camshafts. The turbos were sourced from Honeywell/Garrett Turbo Technologies and are magnesium-housing units originally used for Toyota’s CART efforts. They don’t sell them, officially, but if they did you’d pay close to $10,000 per copy. Get this, the tag on the housings read part number “714201-leno”.
Banks estimates the whole shebang will produce 1600 hp and 3000-lb.-ft of torque. However the 6-speed Allison transmission has a torque limit. So Banks will limit the motor’s output in at least First gear. Still, this thing should light the tires up like a Top Fueler.

what a small motor i hope they dont put these sub motors in at work that are still smallish but over the length of a vn
I think you need to convert foot pounds to newton meters to appreciate the torque...
1100 foot pound-force/second = 1491.39969 newton meter/second
Thats a bloody lot of torque.
Remember torque is a BIG factor in drag racing.
1491 nm of torque. Getting that to the ground not a chance.
Have to remember that this isn't a big revving motor. Built to move a tank, not pull big numbers on a dyno.
Bugatti veyron is also Quad Turbo.
Slow reply, but Leno's 'tank car' is air cooled? Good luck with that
Still think of the times guys, a few of the cars that were tearing around the old tracks at Monza, Indianapolis, Brooklands and Avus in the 30's (Interwar period) had 16 liter V12's motors pushing out something like 190 - 220 BHP. However, there were some great WWII engines, especially the engines used in Aviation, the Merlin-Rolls Royce used in the P-51 Mustang, or the Junkers Jumo engines used in the Stuka and the Merc Engines used in the Italian 'Veltro' and German 'Me - 109' fighters, all exceeded 1,200 BHP by war's end.
