    Default National ID Card

So what are peoples thoughts on a National ID card?

Personally, i think it should extend further and should be compuslory for all Australians to have, it should have card names DNA and fingerprint matches so crimes can be minimised and finalised much quicker.

I know there is some tree huggers out there who claim it is a violation of our rights...well so is being raped/murdered/assaulted and having **** stolen. With everyone on record people will not be able to get away with these sort of things as easy.

    I say bring it on.

I don't like the idea at all - identity theft is already all too common without having all your personal information on a peice of plastic.

well duh.... I have watched the news and been reading alot on this. My question is - How is having one card as opposed to having to provide several forms of id going to stop it? IMHO it is one step closer to having a national identity card and there are concerns that it will in fact increase identity fraud - as voiced by the council of civil liberties, and the Chamber of commerce has also voiced concerns that it will turn into a national identity card.

I have no philosophical civil liberties crap worries about the card.

However: my worries are more based on what a future government will do with the card...not too much of a step to making it compulsory to have ALL your info on it, and a lot of people would agree with that. Then it is a short step to make it compulsory to carry it at all times...a lot of people MIGHT go along with that. Then it is a short step to make it an actual offence NOT to carry it. Then we are getting into a very dangerous area.

My main worry however is that when Queensland brought in the clear plastic photo drivers licences, they were supposedly the height of security, unable to be copied, and the last word in identity protection for drivers.
Then within weeks, the Federal cops intercepted hundreds of fake licences coming in from Hong Kong, all perfect forgeries of Queensland licences, many with the same individuals face but various names and adresses on them. They were obviously meant to be fake ID for illegal immigrants. This has happened since several times.

I trust the idea of the device...I am afraid I just don't trust the government to choose the correct worlds-best technology, no matter the cost, to use which is absolutely foolproof...can you say "lowest tender bidder"?

I agree with you Wombat - your concerns are similar to mine, that eventually will have to carry it on you at all times (like being branded with a barcode), and the security concerns with the technology being used.

By law you are meant to be able to provide ID when asked by police anyway, so what is the difference?

Does it really matter if you have to carry something with you all the time? 99% of people carry a purse or wallet which contains many forms of ID. No difference.

thats right, along with all you credit cards, health cards etc etc i can't see why people have a problem with one card aposed to 20??, honestly the government can find out anything they want about you if they felt the need, and all this information has to be stored somewhere = someone could get access anyway.
    i just want one already

No you don't have to carry ID - except under certain circumstances, driving being one of them.

well i have read part of a book called big brother and no its not about the crappy channel ten show lol its a serious indepth look at how australia is fast becomeing one of the highest countries in the world for privacy invasion! and as for this card i have already read about it in this book and do you know the first original idea was actually going to be a barcode on your wrist that when scanned by police has every thing about you from high scool records to overseas travel, prison time ect the works! thats right a special barcode on your wrist and no this wasnt for prisoners released back into society it was meant for everyone! but... fearing massive public out cry the government went to work on what is no been dubbed the aka nation id card. but at the end of the dat i spose if it helps againts alot of crimes then who cares? oh and the next thing that was suposed to be introduced was the tradeing card that instead of receiceng wages into your account anymore its all done like a credit card! that way the government eliminates cash flow makein it harder for people to rip off the dole and the can see where you spend your income ??

Count me in. Nothing to hide - Nothing to worry about.

Information theft does worry me though. having said that.. I'd need to do some more research as to where it needed to be used etc. Maybe systems need to be upgraded and monitored so that scanners etc can't be used.

I don't really like the idea. I just don't trust people enough to carry a card with all my details around. The DNA and prints thing just seems dodgy to me. But then I'm paranoid and don't even have a credit card.

Why not cut to the chase and just fit a microchip or a barcode. That way you never forget your wallet can't have it stolen etc etc. I already got tats so another one aint going to worry me. Except there will be a bidding war on who gets the numbers that end in 69 maybe it will be like personalised plates.

And if you think a new card is not going to be forged look at the new passports that the govt said cannot be copied, hackers had that down in a week. The people introducing these technologies are usually over forty and would beleive their computer could never be hacked. They don't know sh!t
