Default a little test for the car experts....

this is doing the same trip 250k's each way ( 500k total per car )
    which would use less fuel?

1998 Ford festiva 1.3L EFI 5spd manual 168k on clock.

1979 Toyota Corolla 1.3L Carby 3spd auto 217k on clock.

so which do u reckon is more fuel efficent?
    We got rep back, yaaay!

You'd have to go the EFI - but if the EFI is all clogged up the carb probably wins.

the old corrolla's would run on the smell of an oily rag so id have to give it the win with that comparison...the only thing is!!! will the corrolla make it 500 km's???

lol, the two would be dead even. The 98 Festiva has so much emmissions crap shoved on it that they tend to guzzle a little more then you think they would. Which would be the better car to drive? Festiva FTW

festiva due to its manual, less loss from the transmission.

    Festiva for sure.

3 spd auto gearbox versus a 5 speed manual, I think its pretty safe to assume which one would be revving harder on a freeway. Plus EFI is obviously going to make a difference.

Too many variables, I could make either one win. You would have to drive them the same way, the same speed, on the same day to make an accurate comparison. It's probably a trick question, people will obviously think the Festiva would come out on top. If this test has already been done, the answer is already known. Maybe the Corolla won, but I would put my money on the Festiva. And maybe I am overthinking this......

Festiva again, 2 more gears, EFI I'm not entirely sure if its an advantage.

You could always detune the rolla so its running on less then the smell of an oily rag and limp it there.

But in all honesty, I'd take the Festy, at least that way you've got a bit more comfort, more than likely a cd player and aircon.

I'd rather spend an extra 30 dollars on fuel then suffer in a hot car with no music.

there is really no varibles it was the EXACT same trip, similar outside temp, traffic was similar both trips ( in fact in the corolla i drove through peak hour traffic but when i went in the festiva i left later so peak hour had died down ) fuel price was 1.08 when i drove in the festiva, 1.12 in the corolla.

it was from hallett cove to pt. rickaby in the yorke peninsula driving down the same roads on each trip.

And the winner is: * drum roll * THE COROLLA!

the corolla used a total of $35 dollars of fuel
    the festiva $50

the festiva revs high even in 5th gear so thats what made it use more fuel and i must say i was very surprised because as most of you said its efi, 5spd and a lot newer.

so buy a corolla not a festiva

for a 500k trip i would without a doubt pay the extra $15 for the newer car. which one has better air-con? power steering? safety? etc etc etc blah blah.

Buy neither. I get better mileage from my LS1 on the highways. So buy an LS1!

Edit. I get the same mileage as the Festiva. *Goes looking for his glasses...*

dude, dosnt matter, ratio's are diffrent

i think corrolla, efi is a advantage but the corrolla is a lighter car (its bare basics)

corrolla would be on round 2700rpm on 100km/h my mates and their 4 bangers are like man cruizing down the highway at 3000rpm. i just laughed and said 1800rpm here on lean cruize

my brothers 5.7Ltr GTO monaro (1800kg worth) gets 1200km+ out of a 85 litre tank cruizing at 110km/h

i got 768km out of 55ltrs cruizing to nsw @ 110km/h i think i'd get like 900 now tho with the ajustments to the car, add turbo and it'd be less tho (soon as its working)
