i recently listed a 4 wheeler bike that sold before the listing finished. There was no way to remove the listing so i edited it the same as that bloke did.

pretty sure you can remove listings as long as theres more than 12 hours or something to go.

i got 2 auctions now that i can choose to end right now.

so the only reason you shouldnt have been able to cancel it, was less than 12 hours and someone had bid on it, in which case you couldnt have edited it. or you just couldnt find the end item link, which is in a drop down box in my ebay next to the items you're selling are listed.
