UNPRECEDENTED Stage 4 water restrictions in Melbourne -- including total bans on outdoor watering by residents -- are expected to come into force on May 1.
Despite a sprinkling of rain around Melbourne yesterday morning, including 16mm at Thomson Dam, storages continue to decline.
With little rain forecast over the next week and Melbourne's reserve plummeting towards a third of capacity, experts warned Melburnians to brace for the worst.
The tough new bans would see all watering of lawns and gardens outlawed, turning suburban Melbourne parched brown and costing the state's nursery and turf industries up to $100 million.
Bans on all watering of sportsgrounds -- except for professional clubs -- would also hit grassroots sport hard.
A ban on car-washing -- except with recycled water -- under Stage 4, would finish the $500 million Victorian industry, Australian Car Wash Association spokeswoman Diane Ross said.
Water Minister John Thwaites said yesterday laws might be overhauled to require more industries to make savings -- to save the car wash industry from collapse.
He said heritage parks, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, would still receive some exemptions under Stage 4.
Melbourne's water storages -- dropping about 1 per cent per fortnight -- were yesterday down to 34.5 per cent.
With the trigger for Stage 4 at 29.3 per cent, Mr Thwaites said: "It's unlikely it will come as early as April 1, but if we don't get much rain there's certainly more chance of it being May 1."
The weather bureau said the chance of higher-than-average rainfall in Victoria from March to May was 45-55 per cent, with the El Nino effect, which contributed to the 2006 drought, over.
I find it deplorable that we're staring down the barrel of stage 4 restrictions yet a temporary pool is still being set up at Rod Laver Arena for a one off swimming competition.
Govenment hypocrisy at it's worst when we already have a perfectly capable aquatic centre!![]()
i fully agree with you. its the stupidest idea ever. They tell us were not aloud the fill up our own pools but there they go using millions of litres of water. smart cookies they are!![]()
Sorry about the thread title. Was meant to read Stage 4 restrictions. Maybe a mod could change it?
Yep very hypocritical. My olds can't fill up their poxy little inflatable pool yet Bracksy can do whatever he wants. I hope he uses a bucket to top it up as per stage 3 guidelines!![]()
lol! i was gonna mention the bucket, which is also a stupid idea. I wonder how the come up with some of there idea's?!![]()
Yeah obviously some real bright sparks work in the environmental department.
Watching bracksy fill an Olympic sized swimming pool with a bucket would be priceless.![]()
People without rain water tanks gonna not be able to wash their cars. I think we can't even go to the commercial cleaners as well, correct me if I'm wrong.
It is being filled with recycled water.
Way of the world guys.
Whether we like it or not, the fat cats get their way everytime.
They will justify it by saying the swimming championships will generate revenue for victoria and i suppose it will but all the revenue in the world won't make it rain.
Yeah, this is the govt at its best.. telling us not to use water then they go and waste it on a temporary pool.. wonder where the water will go after the event?

i live on the sunny coast. but i read in a newspaper that movie world on the gold coast are going to build a huge water tank to bring in movie makers (one of only a few in the world). but they are on water restrictions so i don't know where they are goin to get the water to fill it up from. trevastion dam?
also brisbanes south bank lagoon has a massive leak at the moment and they r just continually filling it with water sumfin like 200000L a week or sumfin but we r on level 5 water restrictions and they aint fixin it till next month som time i mean come on wtf lol all we want is some rain
am in the only person who realises that we are only delaying the inevitable?
u have 10 glasses of water and drink one a day, u can this back to one a week, its not going to last for ever? am i missing something here? or has our whole state lost thier minds?
of coarse we r delaying the inevitable but we may as well dalay it as much as possible bacause a drink each day would be nice
and yes they should have thought about water problems 30 odd years ago but they didnt so we yes WE r suffering
state has lost the plot... they built a pool for the ###n comm games and now they want another one for the world champs... and they use the guise of 'we'll be using the water to water the states parks and gardens after the meet is over'...
another little bit of number crunching, the state govt used 29% more water during 2006 than they did during 05... and 05 was bigger that 04 etc...
its a farce and were the ones paying for it in tax etc, and then they want to hik the price up coz theyve ###t up and used too much... its a ###n joke..

Not to mention wasteful government building projects.
50 Lonsdale Street. (Right Next to Casselden Place (No. 2)) The project took something like 3 years to build...32 storey office block building. The reason for its conception : To bring all the departments together supposedly.
Yet they still have regional offices. But the amount of wate a building of that size consumes in its construction is unbelievable.
Not to mention, when i was working there in the last year of its construction, a sprinkler head burst on one of the carpark levels over the weekend. On the monday, when i came in to find 1/2 of the buildings telephones in water...wasnt too pleased
(Get this though, the dumb security guard waded through water up to her knee in one part to turn off the main temp power for the basement....while up to her ankles in water)
But the water all went down the drain.....and wasted. Then there was a pipe that burst on the roof, sending water cascading onto the street below...and evaporating.
Useless useless waste to build a building that technically wasnt needed...and then all the mistakes that were made on the job that caused more waste...

Stage 4 is a joke, if the govt built decent water carriageways we would have alot more water.

We've hooked up a similar system, although it works like this
The way our house is, you can fully stand under the "ground" floor and it is a kind of basement area come garage come entertainment area come study. Anyway, because it was built as a workshop the builder (prev owner) never bothered to box in the pipes, so my old man (being an ex plumber/gas fitter) has put a kind of "gateway" on the shower drainage pipes, when this is turned, it allows the water to flow into a normal 20Lish bin. From there, it is pumped up through a hole in the wall to outside, where it is deposited into a garden wheely bin (one of the old school ones, not these pissy little red lidded ones) which has two hose outputs on the bottom, and from there, the shower water from both upstairs showers is 100% recycled and used on our garden.
I can get pics if anybody cares
Please excuse the rambling...as of 5 minutes ago i have been awake for 24 hours and still have a day of work ahead of me, subsequently, using a waterless washing product to wash cars![]()

The issue is with the government wasting obscene amounts of money on a temporary swimming pool when there is a perfectly good aquatic centre already here. Better read the posts before replying otherwise you might end up looking like a tool. Nobody whinging about restrictions, only the government's blatant wastage when most of the community is doing the right thing.
