It is so you have to withdraw a minimum, hopefully spend it and go back for more. But seriously, the internals of the ATM never changed when the 100s were brought into circulation. They used to give 10s but have removed them to make room for the 100's. $5 was considered too little to withdraw so that was never given an option.
I have a similar question... Why dont ATM's give me hundrends and hundreds of dollars whenever I push buttons?
(The fact I don't even have a card is insignificant, I want money damn it!)
No no... I reckon its what the guys said above ^ it makes you have to withdrawl a minimum amount of $20, which then gets spent in the local area most likely? I wouldn't really know why they don't give out 10s and 5s though... I cant think of any other really logical explanation
Plus, when have banks even considered the customers convinience?![]()
But wait... There's more!!
But that's not all!!!

Why the hell would you only take out $5? If you want this small change take out 20 or 50 and change it to 5's this way you can always have a 5 on you...no idea what difference it makes having a 20 or a 5, you get change with a 20 and do not need to use an ATM.

last year I press for $700 but all came in $50 notes not $100.
ive never had an ATM give me 100s
if you need to get smaller amounts of cash out, go buy a chupachup from woolies and then get out what you need
At least back around 1987 they did...I was working in Mackay and remember getting $5 notes out of Westpac machines. I think it was also available into 1988 or so, maybe a bit later.
I also recall Wide Bay Capricorn machines giving out $10 machines as the smallest denomination.
It was actually handy being able to take out small amounts if you are trying to keep to a budget (and who isn't)...you take out $20, you will spend it all quite quickly...trust me...
I agree...it would be "Profits" and maybe cheaper machines...
The ATM's down here have an option for which denomination you want, at least the Bankwest ones do. I thought my reason sounded good anyway.![]()
they dont give out 5's or 10's coz they are ATM's
I remember when you could get 10 bucks out of an ATM. But that was when you could actually buy something with it. Inflation has made the 20 buck note the new 10 buck note. When I started driving I could get away with only putting 5 or 10 bucks of fuel in the car(it was 55cpl then), now its useless to do anything below 20 and I used to spend about 80 bucks for a trolley full of groceries, now I dont see any change out of 200.
EDIT:I miss the good old days.![]()
Im not a complete idiot, some parts are still on backorder!
Yeah it would seem dumb, just getting a $5 note.
Usually I just get out say $20/$50, and cash in the notes at a servo, or somewhere, to break it up if I only need a small amount.
Speaking of whch. How f***ed up is it when you want to buy something small, like a 30c cone from Maccas, and all you have is a $50 note.? I don"t want to break it up, just for a 30c cone. lol
They should get rid of 5 cent bits already. Ive got about 100 of them in my car because you cant use them for anything.

put all these coins in a container and take them to the bank every year. you can end up with an extra few hundred dollars. its like getting money you didnt earn.
anyways, if you ever want small change, just come get cash out from my liqour store. i dont care if people dont buy anything, ill let them get 5 cents out if they want

Depending on the size of the ATM most only have 2 cassettes in them so that limits them to 2 demoninations of notes...
$50's and $20's can make up any amount not ending in $5 (except $30 dollars of course !!) with a minimal amount of notes being required...
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?
What I mean is im not going to walk into a shop and throw down a bag full of 5 cent bits and I dont usually have time to go to the bank to cash them in. Even handing over 1 dollar in 5 cent bits is a lot of counting to do.
EDIT:Think next time I go to maccas ill throw them in the donation tin.

You don't want to walk in and dump then on the counter looking like a beggar you mean. It looks like you have more money if you buy $5 worth of something and pay with a $20. If you count out $5 in change you get judged.
Something we used to do in our younger days of pizza deliveries was to put all the tips we got in a big tin and count it all out at the end of the year into the plastic money bags you can get from the bank. They weigh it and make sure it's correct and change it into notes then we use this to buy Christmas presents. We used to average about $500 a year this way, and we never dipped into our day to day living money for gifts.
Why would you only take out $5 at a time from your ATM when some banks charge you for each transaction. You would be better off drawing out $50 and then stashing the remaining $45 at home until you neeed it so the bank doesnt charge you every time you take out $5
