Default I want to get a new car for my wife...but not like this :(

So I get a call from my wife today....the Saturn has broken down and she is stuck on a freeway bypass and is to afraid to get out of the car. So, me being the lovely doting husband that I am grab my keys and tearing out of work trying to get to her and my daughter as fast as I can.

Get there and get them into the car. I see what happens when I starrt the car...starts just fine. Thats strange I thought she said she lost all power and the sound was similar to when the serpentine belt snapped on the Subaru.

Opened the hood and there is the serpentine belt spinning happily away. Oh no I think it must be th timing belt (kick myself hard in the head for even considering that since the engine was running.)

I stick my head underneath the car only to see a pool (read as lake) of transmission fluid sitting on the ground. More oh crap and other lovely words ensued. Call my buddy to bring his tow truck down. As we load it up onto the truck we hear this "clank" and down the bed of the truck rolls this gear from out of the car.

Waiting for the report from the mechanic on Monday but they think it's going to need a new transmission. But, I may get away with simply having a snapped axle. I'm hoping for the latter.

But it served as a good point to me. Her Saturn now needs to go. She loves her little car and it really is an EXCELLENT car. But I can't feel happy with my wife driving around in a 10year old car with over 100K miles on it. I have no issues with driving my 170K subaru clunker and I wouldn't really care if I was driving her car. But I'm not letting her drive it anymore.

So, I'm going to be leasing her a new Subaru. We are settled on the Impreza for sure. But she wants a wagon with a moonroof but you just can't get them. So, I'm debating on if I get the wagon with a few options and a 5spd or get the Special Edition package in a sedan. She has ALWAYS wanted a moon roof.

What do you guys think? Sedan with roof or wagon?

actually slight difference here in the US

Sunroof = Flip up piece of glass in the roof
Moonroof = Sliding piece of glass that disappears into the roof liner

As it's going to be her new car, you should go for what she REALLY wants. As long as it is still practical for the kids as well. But I'd go the sedan. Unless I really need the extra space of the wagon.

    thats nice..but I don't live there

It's looking like the sedan...forgot to mention that it'll have a 5spd as well. They are both brand new so I can pick whatever options I want.

Have you put both cars to her and asked her what she'd rather? I think get the sedan. Just for that extra bit of class...lol

No, you see I never ever ask my wife what she wants. She is simply given what she gets and I ask the entire internet population what she should have.....

Of course I did that. She has had them both on very long test drives and is completly satisfied with either vehicle and has left the vehicle in my hands as to what I want to do.

Well in that case, now look at what would suit her better. Does she need the room of the wagon? Or would a sedan suit her fine? We need pics I think.

Go wagon, more versatile, you can chuck heaps of stuff in the back for a weekend away and if it was me id go the wagon 4 acoustics and btw last time I checked we are pretty much all in Aus so we call em sunroofs with plastic slidy thingys (j/k)

The Imprezza does not lose out on much cargo space between the wagon and the sedan, unless you like to pile gear to the roof. Obviously if the decision has been left to you between sedan or wagon the priority of having a wagon is not so important.
The view out the windscreen is the same, the driving and handling are the same so to me it would come down to what is the next priority.
That is the moon roof, easy, get the sedan.

Why not wait until the VE models start rolling out over there? They proved to be alot safer then WRX's and have quite a bit of room and a V8!!

A V8 in the SNOW and on two wheel drive - I don't think so!!!!
That would be quite unsafe for his family. I think Subaru is 4 wheel drive so it would be more safe.

How is it unsafe, ESP, trac control etc, you do not need a 4wd in the snow.

What is so stupid about it? VE's have ESP, ABS, Traction Control etc and proved to be much safer then Subaru's in tests, i'm not a fan of VE styling, however, credit goes to them for the safety features.

Minux, when was the last time you drove through snow? I've driven plenty of Chargers and 300s through the snow and no amount of traction, ESP and VDC can perform better then AWD in the snow. Trust me man, I'm livin' it right now.

Ah the classic trap ,your wife can't make up her mind which she'd rather have so she leaves the decision to you.The first,or infact anytime something goes wrong with it,you'll be reminded that you were the one that made the decision to get that particular model.Just tell her that she's the one that's going to be driving it so she's gotta make the decision.
No,as pretty much everyone has said you've got to look at what you want out of it,will it be used as a shopping trolley/children's taxi? then go with the sedan. If you've got hourdes of neighbourhood children to run to sports on saturdays, large pets or a large amount of gear to schlop around then go with the wagon. As far as Imprezza's are concerned I don't think there's alot of difference between the two handling/performance wise unless you want to take it rallying at weekends
